An Iron Age bow brooch fragment. It is the bow only, and is worn and corroded. The bow is hollowed at the back, giving a domed, oval shape. It tapers to both its terminals, which are incomplete due to old breaks. One of these is flat and is likely to have held the catchplate. The opposite end has a stepped profile, at right angles to the bow, and its broken tip suggests the beginning of the coil of the pin now missing. There is the possibility of bands of linear decoration on the bow surface, but this may be a trick of the corrosion. The fragment measures 29.79mm in surviving length, 1…

There is indeterminate moulding on the bow, obscured by the abraded surface of the metal. The foot is rectangular in section, and is bent backwards, terminating with an incomplete catchplate. The brooch measures 36.78mm in surviving length, and the bow is 7.96mm at its widest, with the foot tapering to 1.5mm. It weighs 2.24g. A parallel is illustrated from Kelvedon (Rodwell 1987,pp57-58, fig.43, no.8…

a copper alloy Late Iron Age bow brooch, a Nauheim derivative or La tene III type. The brooch appears to have been constructed from a single piece of metal, expanded at the foot and curled back to form a vertical catchplate. The catchplate is decorated with two pairs of incised lines, at the top and the centre, and a further single line at the base. The bow is a simple wire, 1.6mm in thickness, which runs vertically from the catchplate, before a slight bend then a single spring coil curves to one side. It is incomplete, and would have continued to coil before descending as the pin. Th…
