An incomplete silver-gilt signet ring
Date: Probably first half 16th century
Description: Silver-gilt signet ring with lozenge-shaped bezel and faceted shoulders. The bezel has a beaded border and is engraved with the initials TS.
Discussion: The decoration on the shoulders and the lozenge bezel are a late medieval type, but the lettering is more 16th-century in style, hence the later dating.
Metal content: The precious metal content of the ring fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%.

A narrow gold finger ring of probable 17th century date. The ring has a shallow section and is dented and misshapen. The interior of the plain band is inscribed in lower case italic script: + thyncke on me. Two different versions of this inscription are recorded by Joan Evans in 'English Posies and Posy-Rings' (Oxford, 1931), p. 97: Think on mee (from a will of 1618) and + THINKE. ON. ME (BM, Dalton 1302). The style of lettering, the spelling, and the use of a short text on the ring all suggest a date in the 17th century. Dimensions: 19mm (external diameter) by 4mm (width of band). Wei…

A cast gold posy ring of probable early 18th century date. The flat gold band is inscribed on the inside 'content hath noe want'. The script could be an 18th century hand. The maker’s mark (TH) written in black letter is most likely identified with one of two smallworkers, the first of which entered his mark in 1711 and the second in 1717 (Grimwade, nos. 2800, 2801). As the find probably dates to later than 1706 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996 (N. Awais-Dean, The British Museum, 16.04.07).

An incomplete cast copper alloy finger ring of probable 3rd century AD date. The surviving portion comprises the bezel, the 'keeled' or angular shoulders and a short length of the hoop. The former diameter was approximately 26.5mm and the ring weighs 8.9g. The bezel is lozenge-shaped with a central raised roundel, 12mm in diameter, probably intended to imitate an intaglio. This is worn and no detail can be discerned. There is incised decoration on the lozenge in the form of an incised border with a curved line on the interior of each corner. The ring's shoulders are flat and triangular…

A cast copper alloy finger ring of late medieval or post-medieval date. The slightly distorted hoop measures 17.8mm in diameter, it is 5.5mm wide and 1.2mm thick. It weighs 2.4g. The hoop has a rectangular cross-section and its width and thickness are consistent all the way round. On the exterior of the hoop there is a stamped pattern formed from wide and hollowed X-shapes, bordered by narrower X-shapes, alternating with diagonal branches. A similar finger ring features in Bailey's 'Detector Finds 3' (1997, p. 24). This is thought to be late medieval in date, but simple finger rings wi…

A gold mourning ring dating from 1753. The ring's outside diameter is 21.6mm, the band's width is 3.3mm, its thickness is 2.1mm and it weighs 4.2g. The parish registers for Milborne Port record that a William Byshop married a Sara Hallet on 23rd October 1739 (Hugh Vincent, pers. comm.).
