Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete and bent Medieval copper-alloy composite buckle plate. The plate consists of a 8.5mm wide strip folded back on itself to the outside, around what would have been an iron spindle that retained a pin (prong now missing) in a central plate recess. On the other side of the middle strip is a separate and thinner third strip which when viewed in plan has a fiddle-shaped terminal end stopping short of the loop. On a medial alignment towards the looped end where all three layers are coincident, are two longitudinally set and immediately adjacent extant rivets, securing through all …

County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Gilded copper alloy late Medieval to Post Medieval finger ring. Oval recessed bezel with missing decorative setting, tapering from the shoulders to a narrow 1.5mm sub-circular section hoop. A copper-alloy frame from a single-loop buckle of 11th to 12th century date.
The frame is broadly 'D' shaped , expanding to form a sub-triangular pin rest with moulded decoration in the form of a zoomorphic head. The curved sides of the buckle have evidence of shallow incised decoration extending across their width. The axis bar has significant remains of iron corrosion in the central area, but none of the pin remains.

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper-alloy open type thimble or 'sewing ring' of late medieval to early post-medieval date. Approximately one third of the circumference remains. The ring is undecorated other than the functional circular punched depressions, arranged in four irregular rows. The metal has corroded to a dark green/mid-brown colour.
Ring thimbles are found in British contexts from about 1450 AD; the sides tended to become more upright after c.1550 (Holmes 1988: 1,3) so this example is probably late medieval or early post-medieval in date .

Plain hollow object, probably a pommel from a dagger. From the side it is oblate in shape and sub oval in plan due to both sides being flattened. At one end there is a 7mm diameter round hole and on the opposite a 9mm square hole on the same axis. There is no decoration and it's plainness makes it hard to accurately identify as it could potentially be part of an number of objects. However the hole configuration is similar to those on late Medieval - Post Medieval pommels from daggers. See, for example, SF-C87850, NCL-1C8472 and WMID-F5E1C3 on this database and the "London Museum Medie…

A Post Medieval cast copper alloy knife end-stop. The end stop consists of a moulded terminal in the shape of back-to-back crescents. The terminal side of the crescents is separated with a raised spine the end of which may have an old break. If this is the case, the design was probably that of a stylised fleur de lis. The other side has a slot in its base to take the tang. Related knife stops are illustrated in Read; Metal Artefacts of Antiquity (2001) p88; and are dated to the 16th century. Dimensions: length 16.23mm; width 15.6mm; thickness 8.9mm; weight 9.83g

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Post Medieval cast copper alloy square coin weight for a gold ryal. A ship is depicted on the obverse face, the reverse is blank. The Ryal coin was first issued by Edward IV along with its half and quarter in 1465 at a weight of 120 grains and a value of 10 shillings. Its distinctive design is a king in a ship which has a large rose on the side. In 1553 Mary increased its value to 15 shillings and Elizabeth I also issued a similar coin in her third coinage at the same weight and value. The earliest coin-weights are round with the obverse design of the coin - the king in ship…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Medieval to Post Medieval cast lead alloy object, probably a weight. The weight is circular in plan with a concentric circular depression on one side forming a wide rim. Since lead is so easy to fabricate lead weights such as this with simple functional designs, have been produced for many centuries. Accordingly, without archaeological context they are difficult to date precisely. A range of circa 1000-1800 is suggested for this example. Dimensions: diameter 45.05mm; thickness 17.95mm.

A Post Medieval bi-face cast lead alloy token. The token is circular in plan. One face has the initials IC or IG but the other is almost too worn to resolve but id could be a fleur de lis. Leaden tokens were used for a variety of purposes. These ranged from small change, to checks and tallies for services rendered such as hop picking. They were in use from the Medieval period into late Post-Medieval. A number of designs exist that were produced centrally and circulated nationally, but since lead is so easy to fabricate by far the majority were made by local artisans and were used e…
