Fragment of thin gold sheet or foil, from an object of indeterminate use and date. The artefact comprises a flat, roughly D-shaped sheet, with a single neat straight edge. A crease follows the line of the straight edge about 2-3mm from it, forming a slight  groove or ridge along the edge. The rest of the object has hammer marks, probably from being beaten into its flat sheet form. Although the straight edge appears to have been neatly cut (or scored and folded until it broke), it is not clear if the straight edge is part of the form of the …

Copper alloy fragment of unidentified object of unknown purpose and date. The fragment appears to be a small piece of a circular container body or lid (estimated diameter 55mm), where it turns-down around the circumference to form the sides of the body or a rim (wall thickness 1.8mm). What would be the top appears to be very slightly domed. It is decorated on both surviving outside faces with raised oval pellets; the inside faces are smooth. All edges are broken and it has a rough light green patina with the pellets worn lighter. Unfortunately the fragment is too small t…

Plano-convex possible ingot. Sub-rectangular cast strip (69.5mm x 17.5mm x 3mm) with asymmetrical half round ends; flat on the reverse with a curved wedge-shaped cross-section. The underlying metal is quite hard and has a silvery colour with a dark brown patina. It is very dense and is slightly magnetic. Date unknown, but see note below.

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large amorphous-shaped piece of copper alloy, possible casting waste. The waste does not contain any evidence of slag or mineral ore within it's surface contours and is not from a refining process. It has solidified unfettered from the molten state and may possibly be associated with casting or industrial activity hereabouts. No metallurgical investigation has been carried out and the object remains un-dateable. A good deal of similar material has been found in the plough-zone of the fields in the vicinity of this find and further information and context is discussed in the notes sect…

Copper alloy handmade nail of unknown date. The nail has a large sub-circular flat head from the nominal centre of which springs an integral square sectioned tapering prong. The flat head is set at an angle of approximately 25 degrees to the horizontal. The oblique angle appears to be by design and not the result of damage and this coupled with the copper alloy manufacture may suggest a specialist purpose such as ship building or a non-spark application. The nail has an even dark green patina indicative of age, and as a handmade example it would predate the industrial revolution.

Copper alloy hollow-cast unidentified object. The object consists of a hollow ovoid terminal knop with an integral narrowed, concave-sided tubular neck. At the centre of the ovoid end there is a 6mm circular hole. The biased nature of the weight suggests the ovoid end is not uniformly hollow and whilst the internal diameter of the hollow neck is cleared through the middle of the knop to the end hole, there is substantial mass between this void and the internal wall of the knop. Investigation with a probe to obtain a sample shows this to be a reddish sand of uniform grain size (see pho…

A cast lead alloy weight. The weight is 8mm high and tapers from 15mm in diameter at the base to approximately 13mm at the top. The sides are convex. There is a 6.5mm parallel-sided circular hole running from top to bottom through the weight. Weights such as this were in use for centuries and lack diagnostic features and a typology, therefore outside of a dateable context it is not possible to be specific on either date or use. Possibly a line or net weight, Roman to post-medieval.

A corroded and complete cast copper alloy annular bead, of unknown date. The bead has an angular D-shape or sub-triangular cross section and is pierced with a central hole approximately 5 mm in diameter. The slight grey patination colour to the metal suggests that the bead has an increased tin content. It measures 11.31mm in diameter, 5.11mm thick and weighs 2.1grams. This particular bead has been found with a wealth of objects dating to the Roman period (c. 43-410 AD). However, as these types of beads have been manufactured from the Bronze Age to the Post Medieval period a posi…

A pair of copper-alloy sub-triangular plates of unknown purpose or date. The plates have two coincident perforations, one close to the centre and the other near to one point. It is possible that the object is a strap-end; however, it may have served a different purpose. There is no decoration on any surface, but traces of a black coating can be observed on two of the surfaces. This type of coating is often seen on dress accessories and is sometimes referred to as lacquer (Buckles 1250-1800, Whitehead, 2003. p8). The degree of corrosion is extensive and suggests that the item is of s…

A cast copper-alloy ring-shaped bead of unknown date. The bead has a D-shaped cross section with circular-sectioned perforation at the centre. It measures 14.5 mm in external diameter and is 5.6 mm thick. It weighs 4.43 grams. Simple coppe-alloy beads are hard to date accurately as they were used widely from the Bronze Age onwards, becoming more common in the Roman and Medieval periods and enduring until the Post-Medieval period . This particular type of bead has been found elsewhere in Sussex in conjunction with supporting Roman material: cf. PAS records SUSS-368530 and SUSS-3957C6.

An incomplete copper-alloy object of uncertain (Roman to post-Medieval) date. The remaining piece is of flat section and sub-trapezoidal in plan, with irregular breaks at either end. The wider end appears to retain traces of a scalloped edge. Decorating the upper surface are 14 ring-and-dot punchmarks, arranged in three rows of four, with the remaining two in between the top two rows. A V-sectioned groove cuts transversely across the scalloped end of the piece, breaking up the punchmark design, and a corresponding groove also extends across the otherwise blank reverse. The two inta…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval or Post Medieval object, possibly a mount. The object is rectangular in form with a D shaped cross-section. One end finishes in an old break, the other in a point with two symmetrical side knops. Between the two knops there is a circular rivet hole that shows evidence of rust at the surface. Although the object is generally flat, the underside surface has a slight but regular curve, suggesting that it was originally fixed to a curved surface. The object is undiagnostic but the form suggests a Medieval date, possibly a casket mount or dress a…

An incomplete Medieval or Post Medieval copper alloy object. It is a broadly rectangular shape that tapers along its length towards an inwardly curved end which terminates in a narrow, short rectangular stub. The curved area has two parallel bands across the width of the face, in between which there is a central rivet of different "white metal" alloy composition that protrudes by 1.7mm through to the other side. The wider end of the object is bent slightly backwards towards the rear face where it terminates in an old fracture. No direct parallel for the object can be found but the fo…

A copper alloy object; probably a bead. It is broadly circular in shape with a 3.2mm central circular hole. However, part of the outside edge has two angled facets that may be where it has broken from a larger object. One face of the object has a more convex shape than the other which in places is almost flat. The degree of patination and corrosion suggests the object has some age. No further stylistic embellishment is present. The object measures 11.2mm in diameter and weighs 1.65 grams. The surface is rough and has a dark greyish-green patina.

A cast lead spindle whorl or possibly weight. It has a domed top and flat base with a tapering circular hole running through the centre. It is 28.0mm in diameter, 10.5mm tall with a hole 9.8mm in diameter at the base and 6.9mm at the top and weighs 37.83 grams.
