TREASURE CASE: 2012 T356 A medieval brooch with a circular frame and a recess to accommodate a pin. The pin has a grooved collar and is bent out of shape at about a 90 degree angle. The brooch is silver and dates from the thirteenth century. Dimensions: diameter 15 mm. J P Robinson Curator of Medieval Collections 9th August 2012 Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

TREASURE CASE 2012 T126 A medieval brooch, circular in shape, with a recessed bar for the attachment of a pin, now missing. The circumference of the frame is decorated with three equally spaced leaves resembling ivy. The frame has a raised central ridge either side of which is an alternating design of squares and circular punches. The reverse of the brooch is flat and plain. The wings are incomplete, but the surviving sections are rectangular with a 'C' shaped cross section. There is a lug on the reverse of the wings with one hole and a break at the top, where the pin chord and axis bar would have been attached. Incomplete Roman cast copper alloy 'Dolphin' or colchester derivative brooch. The brooch has tubular wings, each with 5 vertical mouldings on the front face. The reverse of the wings has a central slot where ther hinged pin is attached, and the chord for the hinge can be seen terminating at the flat, circular terminals of the wings. An almost complete Iron Age cast copper alloy brooch, of Nauheim/La Tene III type dating to c.100BC-AD100. The brooch is now distorted but consists of the bow and damaged catchplate and is missing its pin along with coils from the chord at the head. There was likely to have been four bilateral spring coils of which almost two complete coils remain. One coil extends down to form the bow of the brooch which expands to a width of 7.36mm. The surviving section of the bow is plain and undecorated, it has an oval cross section. The incomplete wings are rectangular with a slight recess on the reverse, where the pin fittings would have been located. The surface of the metal is pitted. It has a dark green patina. It is 10.03mm long, 15.54mm wide across the wings, the bow is 6.82mm wide, 5.83mm thick. It weighs 1.8 grams.

Early Roman cast copper alloy bow brooch fragment. Only the foot and catchplate survive. The catchplate is triangular. The foot has a trilobate cross section and terminates in a short cylindrical knop with a flat base and a groove around its circumference. The surviving section of the brooch is 14.45mm long, 10.19mm wide, 1.12mm thick across the catchplate, 2.72mm thick across the foot and the terminal knop has a diameter of 5.54mm and is 4.12mm long. It weighs 1.2 grams. It has an even, dark green patina.

Iron Age la tene I brooch fragment. Only the bow and part of the catchplate survives. The bow is a pronounced arch in profile. It has a circular cross section that tapers in diameter towards the head and foot. There is a worn break at the top of the bow, with no surviving head or spring fitting. The foot has a small and incomplete triangular catchplate which is perpendicular to the bow. It is 40.13mm long, the bow is 6.30mm wide and 5.29mm thick. The bow is 15.36mm deep. It weighs 6.1 grams.
