Burnham Hoard 2010 T509: Ceramic: The pottery in the hoard appears to produce three seperate vessel bases, giving a minimum of three vessels associated with the hoard, however only the one remained relatively in tact.
Area D: Block lifted vessel: The Burnham hoard contained one almost complete pottery vessel which was block lifted (hoard item T.D.2) before being deconstructed along fault lines to remove the metalwork contents. Three grey ware pottery rim sherds from different vessels.
1) Fine sandy grey ware with mica inclusions. There is a double groove running around the base of the rim. The rim is oval in cross section, with a flattened back edge. The neck extends at a 90 degree angle from the base of the rim. The rim is 16.11mm long, 7.45mm thick.
2) Coarse grey ware, with small flint inclusions throughout. There are several extremely sparce black inclusionsm which are c1-2mm. The rim is sub-triangular, with one flat and two curved edges. The neck is significantly narrower. Rim is 23.04mm long, 15.52mm…

Grey ware pottery vessel sherd. The surface of the fabric is quite rough with small flint inclusions throughout. There are some sparce voids from larger inclusions which have either burnt of leached out of the fabric. There are also several large (c1-2mm) black inclusions, although these are extremely sparce. The sherd measures 48.00mm by 36.66mm, is 10.24mm thick and weighs 22.60mm. The sherd only slightly curves.

Grey ware pottery vessel sherd, forming part of the base and lower body wall. The outer fabric is light grey, the inner fabric is reddish-brown and the core is a darker grey. The fabric is fine sandy, with mica inclusions and small, sparce voids from inclusions that have either burnt or leached out of the fabric. All the breaks are worn. The sherd measures 38.02mm by 62.42mm and is 10.89mm thick. It weighs 31.03 grams.

Two openwork pieces of triangular lead, joined at each corner. There are ceramic fragments between the peices of lead, which are orange with a dark grey core; the fabric has mica inclusions. The ceramic extends beyond the edges of the triangle. The lead could be a form of pot mend, however it is unusual in construction. The fabric could be late Roman in date.
The lead is 34.77mm long, 28.09mm, with each layer lead being 3.2mm thick. The ceramic is 5.3mm thick. It weighs 31.6 grams.

Hollow pottery figurine, representing a Roman goddess, probably Juno. The head is forward facing, with a rectangular nose and oval recesses for the eyes. There are no details for a mouth. The ears and hair are covered by a headdress - the headdress is oval when viewed from above and it extends down the back of the neck. Roman samian ware rim sherd. The rim has a rectangular cross section, with the upper edge being lightly rounded - it is 13.08mm high, 9.55mm thick. Immediately below the rim is a plan undecotated band 13.36mm wide. There are then two horizontal groves on the body, with stamped decoration below, formed of a semi-circle with five pellets around the upper right edge - only three partial stamps survive. The surface of the fabic is covered in an orange-red slip. The core of the fabric is a darker red-brown. There are no visible inclusions. The body is 5.86mm thick. The sherd weighs 20.5 grams.
