Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Roughly circular, plano-convex piece of lead alloy with a slightly rough flat base and smooth, slightly domed, top. The piece is probably a drop of molton lead that has cooled on a relatively smooth surface. The shape and smoothness of the domed top suggests this cooled in contact with air rather than a mould. Another piece of potential casting waste was found near by (SUSS-ED43B3). Lead was used domestically for many items such as tokens and toys and also for repairs to pots etc from the Roman period onwards. It is 22.9mm by 21.3mm by 3.9mm thick and weighs 13.47 grams.

Cast lead alloy circular uni-faced token. The token has a raised design of a capital T surrounded by pellets on one side. The reverse is blank. It is 21.8mm in diameter, 1.9mm thick and weighs 6.08 grams. It has a 90 degree bend to one side. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally, they are therefore hard to date precisely but those with initals are though to be Post Medieval in date, 1500-1850 AD.

An early post-medieval cast copper-alloy hooked tag.
The hollow body is rectangular in shape and D shaped in cross section. One end of the hollow body is open, the opposite end, with the hook, is closed. The convex front is seperate and soldered to the closed end and back. It is divided into 4 panels seperated by five raised ribs running along its length. From the fourth side projects a larger knop in the shape of a crude fleur de lis, this masks the join between the plate and the hook. The plate is 8.7mm long, 6.8mm wide and 1.5mm thick (including the knops it is 13.4mm long by 9.3mm wide). The front is decorated with recessed areas in the shape of a heart with three pellets below contained within an irregularly shaped raised area surrounded by another recessed area all contained within…

Treasure case 2009 T208 - returned to finder
Gold fede ring with clasped hands holding a heart, rosettes flanking the ‘cuffs’. Inscribed ‘Noe recompense but love’. Maker’s mark MB in rectangle: the same mark is on British Museum finger-ring 1961,1202.254 but not identifiable in any standard reference works (see BM website under search the collection database/museum provenance and number search for images). The design of the ring suggests an 18th Century date rather than 17th Century date, and it is therefore unlikely to be more than 300 years old.
