Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Thick secondary waste flake of mottled mid-light to pale grey flint with part of a banded fossil inclusion. There is almost no bulb of percussion, and the flake may have been struck through the chalky cortex adhering to part of the dorsal surface. One margin has an area of possible slight abrupt retouch, but this is more plausibly post-depositional damage. Unpatinated and in slightly worn, battered condition. Neolithic – Bronze Age. 41.2mm long, 31.2mm wide, 14.5mm thick and weighs 19.72g.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two pieces of flint debitage, probably of Neolithic to Bronze Age date, although a later, Iron Age date cannot be ruled out, 4000 BC to 40 AD. One is a tertiary flake struck off a platform with evidence of previous removals in the same direction and slight damage chipping along one edge. The second is a secondary piece with cortext along one side and is a fragment from a large blade, the distal and proximal ends of which are missing. Both are stuck from mottled, mid-grey flint and weigh 4.61g in total.

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two retouched flint flakes / small blades of later Mesolithic or Neolithic date. The pieces are both made from translucent dark brown-grey flint, one slightly paler, and are secondary pieces with small amounts of cortext at their distal ends on their dorsal faces. Both have prominent bulbs of percussion on the ventral face and breaks at the proximal end where the platform should be. Both also have evidence for multiple parallel previous blade removals from the same platform. The paler piece has short, scalar, semi-abrupt retouch down the entire left edge (on the dorsal face) and t…

Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a Neolithic polished flint axehead, probably dating to c. 4000-2400 BC. The surviving fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan and pointed oval in cross section. At both ends it terminates in an irregular break and chips also extend into the sides. Clear striations from polishing survive on both faces of the axehead. The flint is mainly opaque white with some areas of more translucent pale grey and patches of orange iron staining from post-deposition processes. Dimensions: length 47.7mm; width 29.8mm; thickness 15.9mm; weight 29.32g. The size suggests this is from near …

Two fragments of flint cores of Mesolithic to Bronze Age date. Both appear to have been used to produce blade like pieces with repeated removals from a prepared platform. Due to the size of the pieces these blades, at least the last to be produced were very short. The dark grey piece (13.47g) is sub-conical with cortex left on one side and parallel removals from an upper platform. The beige-brown piece (35.68g) also has cortex left along one side but has a broken with a large section, possibly 50% or more, missing to a impact in the centre of the upper platform. There are the scars fo…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Broken segment of a larger tool, probably a side and end scraper of Neolithic date, c.4000-2000 BC. It was formed on a large blade of dark grey tanslucent flint. The proximal end and the right edge (seen from the ventral face with proximal end downwards) is entirely missing to a long break. Impact scars on the ventral in the middle of this break may suggest it was deliberate or may be the result of post deposition impact, sone removals from it on the dorsal face may be accidental damage. There is extensive retouch on both faces along the remaining side to give a straigh edge. Semi abr…

A Neolithic flint axehead, possibly an unfinished roughout, probably dating to c. 4000-2400 BC. The axe has a convex curved blade which is the widest point, from this it tapers evenly in width to the rounded butt. The axe is pointed oval in cross section across the width and broadly so along the length wih the thickest point slghtly closer to the blade than the butt. The blade is broadly C-shaped with a large notch from damage towards one end and several other chips removed by damage on one face. The axe has no evidence of polishing and there is little fine working at the blade althou…

Two chert blades both with clear bulbs of percussion on the ventral face and scars from previous parallel removals from the same platform on the dorsal face. Both have very chipped edges obscuring any retouch. One is a orange chert, heavily repatinated, the other a mid brown. They weigh 12.48g in total. The blade like shape and repeat parallel removals may suggest a Mesolithic- Neolithic date.

Distal end of a retouched flint flake or blade or probably Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. The piece has snapped off a larger, but thin, flake or blade with the proximal end lost. The remaining scars on the dorsal face, and the percussion ripples on the ventral face suggets the piece was removed from a core worked in at least two directions at right angles to each other. The entire original edge has been retouched with short, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch becoming longer towards the ends of the remaining edge. It was possibly originaly part of a scraper but too little remains to b…

Fragment of a core which has part of the prepared platform and scars from repeated parallel removals of blades / flakes form it. The sides, distal end and ventral face are all broken with irregular breaks, made angular due to the burnt surface and with no bulb of percussion visible. The surface is white with angular crack marks. The piece is 35.9mm wide, 27.2mm long, 8.8mm thick and weighs 6.92 grams. The working style and associated material may suggest a Neolithic date.

Two thin blades or flakes that have areas of extensive retouch. Both appear incomplete and may be pieces that were abandoned part way though working. One is a large flake or blade with a snap at the distal end, part of the corner of which has been retouched on the ventral face with shallow, short scalar retouch. There is also long to invasive, scalar shallow retouch on both faces aross the proximal end and the original proximal end with the bulb of percussion has been removed. Fragment of a larger tertiary flake with retouch around two adjacent edges and the corner between them. The flake is missing the proximal end and this appears to be a snapped break with short scalar abrupt retouch across it from the ventral side becoming semi-abrupt around the corner and down the adjacent edge where there is also short scalar semi-abrupt retouch on the ventral face worked from the dorsal side. Fragment of a larger core with damage on the ventral fance and proximal end. On the dorsal face scars from multiple previous parallel removals, small and large, suggest there was a prepared platform at the proximal end, now missing. The break on the ventral face has started in the centre and therefore appears to be accidental or frost damaged. There is an area of cortex at the distal end covering c. 20% of the surface. The entire piece is 58.7mm by 52.5mm by 19.1mm thick and weighs 49.33g. Given the other material found in proximity it is likely to be Neolithic.

Five of the pieces are secondary flakes, retaining less than 10% of their cortex; the remaining flakes are tertiary retaining no cortex. They vary in shape and size but there are several neat blades and fragments of blades. There is evidence of parallel removals off prepared platforms even on the less blade like pieces. Apart from the snapped pieces they all have clear, if small, bubs of percussion. The flint ranges in clour from a dark grey with…

Knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age (c. 2700 BC - c.1600 BC). The arrowhead is bifacially worked and sub-triangular in plan with slightly convex sides and a small chip at the point. There are two round ended notches in the base, flanking the central tang with a barb at either side. The tang is wider and longer than the barbs and has a square, probably broken end. One barb appears complete with working on both faces right down to the tip but is unusually small, the other is missing entirely from an angled break. The arrowhead has…
