Part of the side and mouth of a Late Bronze Age socketed axe, probably of the Ewart park phase 950-750 BC. The fragment consists of the mouth moulding and adjacent part of one side with very worn breaks around all edges. At one point he edge has bent at 90 degrees to continue onto the front or back face before breaking. At the mouth is a thick triangular cross sectioned mouth moulding then a smaller, shallow D-shaped cross section moulding. Adjacent to this second moulding is a side loop, D-shaped in profile and pointed oval in cross section. Slight casting flashes remain along the s…

A copper alloy Middle Bronze Age side looped and socketed spearhead dating to the period c. 1600 - 1150 BC. The blade is leaf-shaped with a lozengiform sectioned midrib. It exhibits a hollow socket and cast side loops. It is complete apart from a small amount of damage to the base of the socket. The spearhead measures 126.9mm in length, 21.6mm maximum width, 9.3mm minimum thick on the blade, 18.3mm in diameter at the base of the socket and weighs 53.54g. The tip of the blade has a slightly break to one side and the edges of the blade are chipped along their length. The sides…

An incomplete cast copper alloy possibly Copper Age (Chalcolithic) flat axehead (c.2400 to 2200 BC). The axehead is sub-trapezoid in plan and flattened oval in cross section across the axe and pointed oval on cross section longitudinally. It is extremely worn with the original surface almost completely lost and is likely to have originally been slightly wider and thicker. The evenly rounded ends suggest is probably otherwise almost complete with perhaps some damage at the butt. The parallel sides are relatively straight, expanding towards a convex curved blade that has a wid…

Late Neolithic or Bronze Age flint awl or borer dating to 3300 to 1000 BC. The piece is made on a tertiary flake with a prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The ripples and aris from previous removals on the dorsal face suggest the flint core was worked in at least two directions. Short semi-abrupt scalar retouch runs around the distal end and the left edge on the dorsal face. This left edge has been shaped by retouch into a distinct projecting slightly blunt ended point for boring holes in wood or hides. The piece is 21.9mm long, 24.1mm wide including the projecting poin…

A flint scraper of probable Late Neolithic to Bronze Age date, c. AD 2700-1000. The scraper is worked from a secondary flake of opaque dark grey flint mottled with paler inclusions with a small amount of cortex remaining in the centre of the dorsal face. The flake widens from the proximal to the distal end. A striking platform with a bulb of percussion on the ventral face survives at the proximal end. Negative removal scars from hinged removals from the same platform are present on the dorsal face. The flake is worked unifacially, struck from the ventral face, with relatively long, ab…

Flint end scraper of probably Bronze Age date, 2200-1000 BC. The scraper is made on a thick secondary flake struck of a previous removal with a large area of cortex, inclusing an indent, remaining down on side. The flint is mottled mid-grey with lighter areas. The percussion waves on the platform and the scars from previous removals on the dorsal face suggest this was struck off a multi-platform core. There is a very large bulb of percussion on the ventral face. There is long, semi-parallel, semi abrupt retouch around the distal end on the dorsal face. There is damage and chipping, po…

A fragment of a late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe head, probably dating to 1100-800 BC and deliberately broken as part of ritual deposition. Only the cutting edge and adjacent section with the end of the socket survive. The cutting edge survives intact and runs in a shallow convex curve 39.7mm long, the blade tips flare outwards slightly but both the tips and blade edge are damaged and chipped. There are some possibly hammering marks on one face from sharpening. The surviving part of the body appears to have had flat faces and convex sides, each side being triangular in cro…

Fragment of a copper-alloy ingot of probable late Bronze Age date, c. 1150 - 600BC. Part of a plano-convex (bun) discoid ingot possibly suggesting the production in a bowl furnace rather than a mould. The upper is flat and the bottom is convex. Only a small section remains with a part of the original edge and very worn irregular breaks on the other sides. The section of the outside edge is too small to idenify the complete diameter. Middle Bronze Age cast copper-alloy palstave (axehead) probably of unlooped type .The palstave is very corroded, with most of the butt lost and some of the blade and little of the original surface remaining. It does however appear to be unusually narrow, especially given its length. The septum is distictly thinner than the blade with parts of a stop ridge surviving on one face. The flanges appear to have been shallow on the butt, widening abruptly at the top ridge but that may be the result of wear and damage.
