A worn and corroded sub-conical weight cast in lead. The crude base bears an off-centre perforation which runs along the length of the object (Dia.: c. 7.6mm); the hole tapers slightly towards the top. Around the hole is possibly a circular groove. This weight is undiagnostic and could date anywhere from the Roman to post-medieval periods.

A cast copper-alloy fragment of uncertain date. It is a broken shaft of square cross-section narrows to terminate in a flattened and rounded end. The metal is a dark red-brown colour with patches of overlying green corrosion product. The terminal is perhaps reminiscent of the eraser end of a stylus. The artefact has been found in vicinity of Late Iron Age and Roman material.

A complete circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is biconvex, with one surface having received steeper bevelling than the other. The top is flattened and the base is slightly concave. It is basic and has suffered corrosion. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact has a spindle hole with a diameter of 6.4mm. The spindle whorl is 7.9mm thick and weighs 16.01g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton …

A bent and corroded part of a cast copper-alloy sheet plate from a buckle of uncertain date. The object is sub-trapezoidal in shape. It tapers gradually from a width of 10.8mm at the attachment end to 7.0mm towards the terminal, beyond which the sides curve to a (now abraded) rounded terminal. At the opposite end there is an off-centre tab; the tab on the other side has been lost. This is a pair of rivet holes at the frame end with a third hole central at the terminal. The object has corroded to an orange-brown colour, with large patches of light-green and off-white corrosion produc…

A worn and corroded small cast lead weight in the shape of a frustum, or truncated cone. It is broadly trapezoidal in cross-section, with a flat base. It has a hole running right through its centre; the hole tapers slightly towards the top which has been flattened slightly at an angle: Dia.: 8.3 - 7.0mm. The artefact now has an off-white surface with denting all over, especially to the base. Such objects are undiagnostic and a wide date range is here given.

A broken cast copper-alloy object of uncertain date and function. The artefact is T-shaped in plan and broken at the end opposite the transverse bar. The longitudinal element curves through ninety degrees from the point at which it emerges from the transverse bar. It has flattened sides and lower surface and a curved upper surface. Set at ninety degrees to it, the centre of the transverse bar has the same cross section. Emerging from the central section is a narrowed arm to each side of circular cross-section. These arms terminate in expanded, flattened ends. On the front of the centr…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy object of uncertain date, possibly a weight. It is broadly circular in plan, narrowing in diameter to the top which features a penannular moulding, a ring either abraded or mis-cast (c. 28.6mm). It therefore has a broadly trapezodal cross-section. It stands on the flat base, but can also stand on the ring. The object has corroded to a variable yellow-brown colour.

A very corroded, incomplete cast copper-alloy object of uncertain date, possibly a lug. It consists of a base of lozengiform cross-section (8.6mm by 8.4mm) with half of a pointed oval moulding it low relief as it extends into a curving element to one side. The end of the moulding is delineated by an incised line that emphasises the step down to the curved element. This latter curves through around a third of a circle before being truncated. An incomplete artefact apparently with an iron core, around which, at one end, a copper-alloy sheathed terminal. The terminal is broadly oval in plan. From one side protrudes an iron element, highly corroded, slightly thicker than the terminal (at 8.8mm). In from this protrusion is a circular perforation with a slightly narrowed waist (min. dia.: 4.15mm). The hole is slightly off centre in both planes. The faces bevel from the top of the hole which forms the high point of both surfaces. Between the hole and the iron protrusion is a moulding whereby the height of the iron piece i…

A corroded lead weight, or possible spindle whorl, of uncertain date. The object is roughly spherical, with flattened top and bottom and with a slight carination around the centre. It has a circular hole running through the centre. It is 21.7mm in diameter, 15.8mm tall with a hole 5.0mm in diameter at the base and slightly splaying open at the top; it weighs 27.72 grams. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely although most are late medieval/post medieval.
