A cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of late medieval date (c. 15th century AD). The weight is decorated unifacially with an incised circular groove within the circumference. Within is a central punch, above which is an incuse crown. The weight is slightly bevelled with a slightly larger lower surface. This latter features a shallower central punch mark. Its weight equates to about two-thirds of an ounce averdepois, assuming a slight loss of weight through wear and any inconsistencies. The artefact now has a largely dark-green patina with some small amounts of pitting and denting…

A small cast lead weight of later medieval date used by goldsmiths in relation to bullion. It is rectangular in form with inwardly curving sides. The upper surface is filled by a fleur-de-lis in low relief; the lower surface is plain. The object now has an off-white colour. Its mass of 55.9 grains (3.62g) relates to an eighth of a Paris troy ounce (30.5g) allowing for c. 5% loss to to wear and corrosion. The form and mass are comparable with a pair of bullion weights illustrated in Biggs and Withers (2000, 49; refs. 156, 157) and an example on this database - ref. SF-8F1591.

A cast lead standing weight in the form of a low cone of circular cross-section with a flat base. From a somewhat flattened top emerges an integral suspension loop. The upper surface is decorated with four groups of raised ribs that cover each quarter. There is generally speaking a central rib with two side ribs springing from the same point, splaying out; one of the groups appears to have an extra rib. The weight has corroded to an off-white colour with some scratch marks on the base. Objects found in the vicinity suggest a medieval/post-medieval date for this weight. For a 'bun-shap…

A cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of late medieval to post-medieval date. The weight has three incised circular grooves spaced regularly between the circumference and a central punch. Resting on the middle groove and extending inwards (overlapping the central groove) is a crowned Lombardic 'h'. This mark was instituted by Henry VII in 1495 and lasted into the reign of his son, Henry VIII (Biggs 1992, 48). The lower surface of the weight features considerable evidence of linear filing with some marks also running diagonally. Its weight equates to one ounce avoirdupois, assu…

A small cast copper-alloy circular cup weight of medieval date. The weight has a circular rim, c. 2.3mm thick, though variable, decorated with c. eighteen punched ring-and-dot motifs that fill its upper surface. The internal base is plain. The sides are bevelled, with the rim wider than the base. The lower surface of the base is slightly abraded at one point of its circumference. The exterior of the sides are covered in diagonal file marks. The weight has a mass of 7.26g which approximates to a quarter of an ounce avoirdupois (7.1g), given original inaccuracy (2.25% heavy). The artefa…

A corroded cast lead standing weight of cylindrical form. It is therefore circular in cross-section, with a flat base allowing it to stand. An integral low suspension loop, trapezoidal in form, with a low central perforation runs across the whole diameter of the upper surface. The artefact now has an off-white surface with slight denting all over. At over an ounce averdepois its mass does not readily fit into this system of weighing.

A cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval (probable late 17th-century) date. The weight has a low rim (W.: 2.6mm) on its upper surface. Within is a punch at the centre of a slightly concave field. Punched within the rim at 2 o'clock is the sword of St Paul (for the City of London). At 6 o'clock, just below the punch, is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights), while at 10 o'clock the royal cipher has been struck. This latter is the crowned initial 'I', denoting King James - probably James II (AD 1685-1688) on the positioning of the symbols (Biggs 1992, 50…

A cast copper-alloy uniface trade weight dating to the post-medieval period, c. 1625-1685.
The object is circular and flattened in cross-section. The upper surface is flattened with a low rim. A circular punch acted as a centring mark. The upper face is also stamped with the Royal cypher mark for Charles I or II at around 11 o'clock, the sword of St Paul at around 1 o'clock, and an ewer (the stamp of Arms of the Founder's Company of London) at 6 o'clock. For such trade weights see Biggs (1992, 50-51). The mass of this example indicates that it is for one ounce (averdep…

A lead standing weight of octagonal pyramidal form with corroded iron apex loop, probably medieval to post medieval in date. The sides taper from a flat base; there are longer sides connected by shorter ones at the corners. It possibly would have functioned as a three-quarters of a pound weight.
Measurements: height 68 mm, base c. 34 mm by 34 mm; weight 337 g
For octagonal pyramidal standing weights see Biggs and Withers (2000, 32) nos 72, 74. Read (2021, 283, 285) illustrates and example (no. 1624) with an octagonal cross-section which he dates to the 12th to 16th century; this…

A cast copper-alloy uniface trade weight dating to the post-medieval period (early-mid 19th century).
The object is circular with a recessed upper surface within a prominently raised lip/rim. The reverse also has a small recessed area at its centre around a centring pit. Incised concentric circles around this presumably result from the turning process. The upper surface also has a central pit within a slightly raised border. This is surrounded by a pair of engraved concentric circles, with a further trio of circles between the last and the bevelling from the lip/rim. The lip/rim is it…

A worn and incomplete cast lead-alloy medieval object, possibly a wall or ceiling ornament. The artefact has six wavy arms all featuring a slightly raised median ridge. All of the points have been lost from the arms; they survive in varying degrees of completeness, from 18.1mm to 25.5mm from the centre. Two arm fragments have been glued back in place by the finder. There is a small circular perforation slightly off centre, for attachment. Decorative mounts with eight arms can be found illustrated in Saunders ed. (2001, 107/118; refs. 190, 191).

A worn, plain copper-alloy sheet rivet which would have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. The object is sub-rectangular in form, having originally been hexagonal. It has been folded in on itself from the sides before being folded back. The object is particularly corroded on one face with a blackish hue compared to a dark green patina on the smaller folds. Corroded iron remains in one of the folds suggests at the composition of the vessel this was used to repair. Similar examples found in Norwich tend to be found in post-medieval contexts (Margeson 1993, 92-93; refs. 574, 575).

An incomplete cast copper-alloy pouring spout of post-medieval date (c. AD 1650 - c. AD 1750). The front part is tubular (Dia.: 15.4mm, internal dia.: 10.6mm). This emerges from a complicated element which is divided into two. At a downwards angle of around forty-five degrees to the spout is a further tubular element (internal dia.: c. 12mm). This second tubular element has been dramatically broken and is now ragged. Above it is a further element which terminates in a projection of sub-square cross-section. These two elements form a rim around the front tube. The lower part is rounded…

A slightly corroded zoomorphic cast copper-alloy spout probably from a ewer of later medieval or early post-medieval date. The spout is tubular and terminates in a dog's head with open mouth; the tube spout protrudes from the open mouth (internal diameter: c. 4.3mm). At the other end it curves through ninety degrees downwards, and expands into a long, pointed neck where it would have joined the vessel (it is tear shaped in cross-section). The head has a moulded nose, prominent, squared brow, and shallow, rectangular grooved ears that protrude very slightly above the head; the eyes are …

A cast copper-alloy terminal collar from a drop handle of medieval date. The small zoomorphic style collar is in the form of a beast's head, probably that of a dog. The forward facing head has a gaping mouth and lines delineating the eyes and eyebrows, behind which moulded and incised sub-oval ears on each side with a central groove. The 'neck' is particularly large and is (hollow) oval in cross-section. This recess narrows towards the animal's muzzle. The piece has corroded and is slightly pitted with a uniform deep grey-green surviving patina. Similar zoomorphic terminal collars can …
