The fragment consists of the axe's blade above which is a worn and abraded termination, placed such that a small portion of the interior of the socket survives.
The axe fragment is sub-rectangular in plan. The broken edge of the axe runs broadly transversely across its body. From this point the sides continue at around the same width towards an abraded, seemingly rounded blade. In cross-section the body of the axe is rectangular, while the blade is a pointed oval shape. At the broken termination of the axehead is the beginning of a socket. As it terminates the socket is broady oval, though as it developed it would probably have developed into a rectangular cross-section. The blade edge is narrow and has multiple deep chips, resulting in losses of patinated surface.
The axehead has a thick dark reddish brown patina in patches across its surface (c. 40%) however much of this has been chipped and abraded away revealing a lighter colour underneath, though similar hue. It is not possible to identify wether the axe has been sharpened due to most of its patina being chipped away. It is not possible to identify wether a casting seem existed or not due to this same reason.
Measurements: 34 mm long from break to blade, 41 mm wide, 9.5 mm thick at its break and weighs 40.87 g.
The fragment represents part of the blade end of a rectangular bodied socketed axe. The lack of diagnostic features prevents a more exact type or parallel for the its form being cited however Socketed Bronze Age Axe are believed to date from the middle of the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1300 cal BC) to the Earliest Iron Age (c. 700/600 BC)131333-1300-7004DEV2022-03-23T00:00:00Z2022-03-23T00:00:00ZSCC receipt 0230072022-11-14T10:42:34Z2022-11-17T16:02:48Z40.87PAS63721B9A0018069.541341711141427231472268322902DevonMid DevonRestricted AccessHalberton CPRestricted Accessbands.shops.handy10DEV-21D1ADCopper alloy10627FragmentBRONZE AGEx13712LateLateBRONZE AGEx13712x13712Metal detectorReturned to finderDEV21B9A8axehead.JPG1203037images/rwebley2/South WestCertain12022-11-17T16:02:49Zfinds-10865541086554DEV-E49E96COINPOST MEDIEVALA worn, incomplete post-medieval silver 1 'cob' real piece of Charles II of Spain (1665-1700), date unclear on coin, but either 1684 or 1694. AD 1400 – c. AD 1600). The pommel is circular in plan with a slightly cusped circumference resulting from the decoration on the upper surface which takes the form of six sub-triangular segments created by grooves radiating from a central slot at the apex. The upper part of the object is carinated in profile and the lower part has facets which are aligned with each of the upper segments. As a result the aperture on the lower surface is externally hexagonal, but is circular internally having a diameter of c. 16 mm. The upper segments also feature a decorative groove towards the flared end. The flat circular base has a pair of small grooves which are diametrically opposed. These may be part of a manufacturing process. Nothing appears to survive of the dagger's tang, which would have been made of iron. The outer surface has a mid to dark gray patina with some corroded patches. There is a small perforation in one of the radial grooves, near the central slot.
Measurements: Length/height: 16 mm; diameter: 31 mm; weight: 43.41 g.

Discussion: Type B vervels (cylindrical in shape) are relatively uncommon compared to other types. There are a few parallels on the PAS database including: NMS-312C0B; LEIC-BB28ED; GLO-E0D6D2; NLM-1A695D; SF-D2253D, all of which have been dated to the 17th century.
The inscription is likely to refer to Melbury House (HE: 1119248), Melbury Sampford, which tended towards a Milbury rendering during the 16th and 17th centuries (or 'Milbury Sandford'). Melbury House was occupied by the Strangways family during the 17th century (historicengland.org.uk). Firstly, it was owned by Sir John Strangways, an English politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1614 and 1666. It then passed to Thomas Strangways in 1675. The vervel, therefore, is likely to have belonged to either Sir John or Thomas Strangways. Interestingly, another vervel belonging to Sir John Strangways has been recorded by the PAS (SOM-E93B19) and submitted as treasure (2017 T533).
Conclusion: The vervel appears to consist of more than 10% precious metal and is more than 300 years old, it thus qualifies as Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.

The body was once piriform, expanding to a rounded base from a point at the top. A broken loop projects from a flattened summit, above a collar of two circular concentric ridges formed by a pair of grooves. The loop only exists to one side. Around 50% of the copper-alloy casing survives, with losses at two main point one the sides, leaving a small remnant between them at the base; the lead core has been lost entirely.
Measurements: 63 mm in maximum height and has a maximum diameter of 49 mm. It weighs 56.22 g.
Weights with a copper-alloy casing around a lead core are known from the Roman period onwards. This example is very similar to SUR-3E3F62, DOR-9B08D5, KENT-2B428C and SOM-563D55, which are dated to the medieval period on this database. Read (2001, 116) illustrates two examples and a fragment of a third, nos 834-836, which he suggests (ibid. 112) 'are plausibly Roman'. More recently a very similar example with the addition of three engraved shields of arms has been published in Treasure Hunting magazine (April 2012, p. 34). The form of the arms suggest it was issued by the Hanseatic League and is probably contemporary with the more globular weights with cast shield designs such as SOM-FDCC33, ie dating from AD 1257 to 1350. An example is also known from the site of Castell-y-Bere, built 1221 (Butler 1974).2929125013504DEV2021-08-07T00:00:00ZSCC receipt 0196302022-10-27T16:16:50Z2022-10-31T15:54:54Z56.2263PAS635AA0E20015604917121143621457614539DorsetWest DorsetBuckland NewtonST680550.8436318-2.45586832bands.shops.handy10DEV-AA1247Copper alloy10627IncompleteMEDIEVALx14221MEDIEVALx14221x14221Metal detectorReturned to finderDEVAA0E25steelyardweight.JPG1201248images/rwebley2/Certain12022-10-31T15:54:54.704Zfinds-10847431084743DEV-A7335DCOINMEDIEVALAn incomplete, clipped medieval silver groat of James I of Scotland (AD 1406-1437), fleur-de-lis coinage, first issue, dating to AD 1424-1437. This coin has been bent slightly and elsewhere suffered some losses to its circumference: at 24.4 grains, it is 32% light compared to the original mass as quoted in Spink (2002, 30). This record has been marked as a Find of Note as it is apparently the first PAS database record of this denomination recorded for this ruler.29291424143713DEV2022-09-10T00:00:00ZSCC receipt 0230232022-10-27T13:01:57Z2023-03-21T09:44:42Z1.58PAS635A7335001DB621.5122122141427231472309922933DevonNorth DevonBrauntonSS473651.10282884-4.18669092bands.shops.handy6DEV-A7C0D2316147653293326Crowned bust facing with sceptre to the left; lis to left of bust, stroke to right; lis on neck; small cross on both shoulders; all within elaborate border (tressure)+ ICOBVS D[EI GR]A [REX] SCOTO[R], lis stopsLong cross dividing the field; in alternate quarters, fleur-de-lis, flanked by small crosses, and three pellets with small central pellet+ Dn[S P]/TEC[TOR]/ mS [LI/BA]TOR m; VILL/[A ED]/InBV/RGh, lis stops10Edinburgh Castle26346741x35518GroatJames I of ScotlandJames_I_of_ScotlandSilver11728Struck or hammeredIncompleteMEDIEVALx14221MEDIEVALx14221x14221Metal detectorReturned to finderDEVA7335DJamesIgroat.JPG1201191images/rwebley2/Scottish: groat of James I not further defined (S 5195 - 5203)South WestCertain12023-03-21T09:44:43.02Zfinds-10845391084539DEV-8F7681COINMEDIEVALAn incomplete later medieval or early post-medieval copper-alloy Portuguese ceitil (one-sixth of a real) of Alfonso V (1438-1481), John II (1481-1495) or Manuel I (1495-1521).This record has been created from images kindly provided by the finder.2936143815214DEV2022-10-23T00:00:00Z2022-10-23T00:00:00Z2022-10-26T10:01:28Z2023-01-30T07:52:39ZPAS6358F76800116417142141427231472305822970DevonTorridgeNorthamSS432851.02986476-4.24030233bands.shops.handy6DEV-8F839084625Shield with arms of Portugal; annulet to rightIllegibleThree-towered castle above rows of wavesIllegibleceitilCopper alloy10627Struck or hammeredCompleteMEDIEVALx14221POST MEDIEVALx41047x14221Metal detectorReturned to finderDEV8F7681ceitil.jpg1200943images/rwebley2/South WestCertain12023-01-30T07:52:39.4Z
