Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy buckle with integral plate of late early-medieval date (c. 10th-11th century). The frame is a slightly asymmetrical, elongated D shape with a possibly zoomorphic protrusion at the outer edge. The plate is slightly narrowed as it meets the frame, but widens slightly and gradually towards the attachment end, by which point it is approximately the same width as the frame. Adjacent to the frame is a perforation around which the pin would have been looped; the pin is now missing. Towards the terminal is a rivet hole in which the corroded remains of the iron rivet are …

Object type: SCABBARD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published
A broken and incomplete copper-alloy scabbard chape of medieval date, missing its side arms which would have been connected to each other via a perforated terminal loop. The fitting is zoomorphic, representing a winged animal in profile, probably a bird, whose head is at the arm end of the base plate. It was formed from a single plate that has been folded in half. The animal's tail is at the bend. The ends of the plate have been riveted together and are in the shape of the animal's head; the rivet survives and appears to have been made of a different alloy. There is a sub-triangular…

Workflow stage: Published
A broken and incomplete late early-medieval cast copper-alloy harness link (c. 11th century AD). The object consists of a central plate with boss; to one side the arm and its terminal loop has been lost. The arms are D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat reverse. At what would have been the centre of the complete link there is a low oval boss which is hollow on the reverse. The complete arm terminates in a circular loop that features three rounded knops, one at each cardinal point. The object is a red-brown colour with some small patches of light-green corrosion product.

Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy fragment probably part of the sheath from the side of a late early-medieval stirrup, or possibly part from the upper end of a stirrup terminal (c. 11th century AD). The curved hollow reverse would have enclosed the sides of the stirrup's iron frame; it retains possible traces of a lead-alloy solder. The fragment is U shaped in cross-section. A slightly wider element is delineated by two transverse ridges. Beyond one of the ridges the object is vestigial. At the other end it continues, similarly cruved in profile, tapering slightly before having been broken as a…

Workflow stage: Published
A late early-medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal (c. 11th century AD). The hollow back would have enclosed one of the arms of the lower part of the stirrup (Williams 1997, 1). This hollow contains traces of the lead solder by which the terminal was attached to the stirrup. The terminal appears to be of a simple, highly devolved zoomorphic design. The upper attachment end is seemingly abraded, though the extent of the losses it has suffered is not clear. Below, the head is moulded, with a central area defined by bevelled sides which flatten out at their edges. Retained betw…

A fragment from a late early-medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal (c. 11th century AD). The hollow back would have enclosed one of the arms of the lower part of the stirrup (Williams 1997, 1). The flat base is abraded on all sides and the recess above appears to contain iron corrosion product. The terminal is zoomorphic and rendered in three dimensions, representing a beast's head with a snub-nose with flaring nostrils. Around the nose are tendril-like moulded lip lappets with tight curls at their tips. The tendrils enclose a V-shaped incision which would have continued int…

A complete copper-alloy strap distributor, bent to one side at one end (c. 10th-11th century). It is formed of two opposing strap loops, broadly triangular, with external recessed strap bars, which are connected by a central moulded animal head. The animal is viewed en face and is cat like, with small, slightly pointed ears, and two converging curved ridges which form both the eyebrows and nose; they do not meet. In profile the animal head can be seen to have gaping jaws. Emerging from the jaws, mirrored behind each ear, is an outcurving tendril. These have bevelled sides. On the …

Workflow stage: Published
A copper-alloy sub-oval buckle frame dating from the 11th or 12th century. The outer edge and sides sub-triangular in cross-section; the latter develop into moulded devolved animal heads at each end of the bar (beast biting bar type). The bevelled front of the outer edge is decorated with engraved lines, transverse towards the centre, tending towards oblique on the sides. The bar is narrower than the frame and is recessed. The pin is missing but there is a groove to act as a pin rest. Iron corrosion product on both surfaces at the end of one of the sides, around the animal head, is …

A worn and corroded copper-alloy strap-fitting of medieval date. The artefact has a sub D-shaped frame with central internal projection from its outer edge. The incurved outer edge effectively consists of a pair of semicircles which converge in this projection which terminates in a slightly expanded knob. The front of the object is bevelled slightly both externally and internally on the front; the reverse is flat. Around the bar part of a sheet plate has been retained; since it is partial the artefact can be considered incomplete, although the frame is an intact component. The plate i…

A medieval copper-alloy buckle of the 'gaping-mouth beast' type, complete with its pin (c. 12th century). This buckle is moulded in three dimensions and takes the form of a hollow, open-mouthed animal head which is integrally cast with a frame and bar. The head is sub-circular when viewed from above and a three quarters circle in cross-section. The top of the head is decorated with a central nasal ridge which bifurcates about halfway along the head to turn into ears which continue down the sides of the head to the base. A cast copper-alloy artefact of c. 11th-century date, probably a strap-fitting. The object is a ring with a thick, slightly angular hoop and convex crude quatrefoil bezel. The quatrefoil head is perpendicular to the hoop. It is decorated with four triangular grooves arranged in saltire, but not meeting at the centre. The quatrefoil thus created has elements of slightly different sizes, one perpendicular to the hoop being quite small compared to the others. An incomplete late early-medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) to medieval copper-alloy cloisonné enamelled disc brooch (late 10th - 11th century), of the Saunderton type (Weetch Type 20.A).
