A cast copper-alloy uniface trade weight dating to the post-medieval period (early-mid 19th century). The object is circular with a recessed upper surface within a prominently raised lip/rim. The reverse also has a small recessed area at its centre around a centring pit. Incised concentric circles around this presumably result from the turning process. The upper surface also has a central pit within a slightly raised border. This is surrounded by a pair of engraved concentric circles, with a further trio of circles between the last and the bevelling from the lip/rim. The lip/rim is it…

A lead standing weight of octagonal pyramidal form with corroded iron apex loop, probably medieval to post medieval in date. The sides taper from a flat base; there are longer sides connected by shorter ones at the corners. It possibly would have functioned as a three-quarters of a pound weight. Measurements: height 68 mm, base c. 34 mm by 34 mm; weight 337 g For octagonal pyramidal standing weights see Biggs and Withers (2000, 32) nos 72, 74. Read (2021, 283, 285) illustrates and example (no. 1624) with an octagonal cross-section which he dates to the 12th to 16th century; this…

A cast copper-alloy uniface trade weight dating to the post-medieval period, the reign of William III (c. 1689-1702). The object is circular and flattened in cross-section. The upper surface is flattened with a low rim. Between the rim and the centre is a pair of finely engraved concentric circles. The upper face is stamped with crowned W (the Royal cypher mark for William III) at around 11 o'clock (over the pair of circles), and, between the circles and the rim: the sword of St Paul at around 2 o'clock, an A (for averdepois) at 3 o'clock, and an ewer (…

A cast copper-alloy uniface trade weight dating to the post-medieval period, c. 1625-1685. The object is circular and flattened in cross-section. The upper surface is flattened with a low rim. A circular punch acted as a centring mark. The upper face is also stamped with the Royal cypher mark for Charles I or II at around 11 o'clock, the sword of St Paul at around 1 o'clock, and an ewer (the stamp of Arms of the Founder's Company of London) at 6 o'clock. For such trade weights see Biggs (1992, 50-51). The mass of this example indicates that it is for one ounce (averdep…

A lead weight of triangular form with rounded corners of uncertain date. It is perforated towards the top, either for suspension or safe keeping. It has a rectangular cross-section. It has a deep longitudinal score mark central on both faces. It is otherwise dented and scratched all over. It measures 24.3 by 13.4mm at the base, and is 55.6mm high; it weighs 114.25g. As such, it it close to, but slightly over, the 113.4g equivalent of a quarter pound weight under the avoirdupois system (Egan 1998, 302; Table 14).

A post-medieval copper-alloy trade weight from the reign of James II (AD 1685-1688). The weight is circular with a wide raised rim on the top and slight central rise on the upper surface with concentric incised lines around. It is 19.7mm in diameter by up to 3.2mm thick and weighs 4.8 grams, 0.169oz. Though it has probably lost weight through corrosion it is siginificantly underweight for a quarter ounce weight, for which it is the usual module (see Biggs 1992, 51). When made the mass may have been refining through filing; numerous diagonal fine marks are visible on the lower surface.…

A squashed (at the sides) corroded lead weight in the form of a frustrum, or truncated cone. The crude base bears an off-centre perforation which runs along the length of the object (Dia.: c. 8.9mm); the hole tapers slightly towards the top (c. 5.2mm). Around the hole is possibly a circular groove. This weight is undiagnostic and could date anywhere from the Roman to post-medieval periods.

A medieval lead shield-shaped weight, probably for two ounces. The weight is decorated with a lion rampant on a raised panel. The perimeter step is decorated with lines. The lower surface is flat and plain. There are suggestions of a perforation central at the top of the panel. Similar weights can be found illustrated in Biggs (1992, 42-43), with direct comparisons in terms of size illustrated in Biggs and Withers (2000, 38; refs. 91 and 92). Its mass of 53.34g is c. 6% light of two ounces averdepois, following the 'binary' system of sixteen ounces to the pound effective from c. AD

A lead item formed of two truncated biconical elements attached together, both flat at the top. A median ridge on the exterior is visible, filed down in places. A large circular hole at a slight angle travels through the centre of the object measuring up to 14.9mm in diameter. The surface colour of this object is greyer than white suggesting a relatively recent date, although an earlier date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval (probable late 17th-century) date. The weight has a low rim (W.: 2.6mm) on its upper surface. Within is a punch at the centre of a slightly concave field. Punched within the rim at 2 o'clock is the sword of St Paul (for the City of London). At 6 o'clock, just below the punch, is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights), while at 10 o'clock the royal cipher has been struck. This latter is the crowned initial 'I', denoting King James - probably James II (AD 1685-1688) on the positioning of the symbols (Biggs 1992, 50…

A corroded cast lead standing weight of cylindrical form. It is therefore circular in cross-section, with a flat base allowing it to stand. An integral low suspension loop, trapezoidal in form, with a low central perforation runs across the whole diameter of the upper surface. The artefact now has an off-white surface with slight denting all over. At over an ounce averdepois its mass does not readily fit into this system of weighing.
