Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A piece of cast iron shot, probably a cannon ball, dating from the post-medieval period, c. AD 1550-1750. It is spherical, with a medial casting seam. At one point is a small raised circular area, presumably a plug deriving from the manufacturing stage. The size and weight suggest that this could be for use in a cannon such as a saker which had a c. 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 inch bore. There is no evidence of impact.
Measurements: Diameter: 83 mm (c. 3 1/4 inches), Weight: c. 2,250 g
It should be noted that there are other uses for iron balls of this size such as in a crush…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A iron wedge-shaped object of unknown date. It is of elongated sub-trapezoidal form with elaboration at the wide end. The narrow end is c. 13.6mm wide. From this the piece expands gradually in width along its length to attain a maximum width of 36.5mm. From this point the object could potentially have formerly narrowed to a point over a far shorter length. Set in from the widest points were perforations c. 7.1mm in diameter. If this were the case, both holes have been abraded through at the shorter sides. Mitigating against this interpretation is the symmetricality of the object as fo…

Object type: HORSESHOE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete wrought iron horseshoe of post-medieval date. It has a rounded outer edge with a keyhole cut out internally. There are eight nail holes, arranged four-four. The holes are rectangular; remains of five nails survive in situ. They are located within a fullered groove at the horseshoe's sides. There are no calkins at the heel end. The artefact is corroded but generally survives well. It has a maximum web width of c. 40.6mm, and a minimum of c. 31.5mm at the outer edge. The internal gap at the heel measures 44.3mm, and the widest internal gap is 62.5mm.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A very corroded iron nail with abraded sub-rectangular head plausibly of Roman date. The stem is square in cross-section, abraded at its tip, seemingly broken. It is off centre on the head, but was presumably central. Iron nails are difficult to date but given the range of Roman material from the vicinity this nail could be classified as being of Manning's (1985, 134) Type 1B.

A corroded and bent cast iron L-shaped lift key from a Roman tumbler lock. The key has a stem and bit perpendicular to the solid handle/bow, and three teeth on the bit. The stem has been bent at an angle of forty-five degrees from its original alignment at a point just below the handle as a result of old damage. The has a rectangular cross-section with an integral eye (W.: 24.45mm, int. dia.: c. 12.3mm). The handle below the eye is broadly rectangular, tapering from a width of c. 17.05mm below the eye to the stem's width of c. 7.55mm, gradually over the last third of its length. The s…

The corroded and incomplete iron spring mechanism from the bolt of a padlock of probable medieval date. The artefact consists of a roughly circular end plate with three protuberances on its upper surface. These are the remnants of the trio of springs: two parallel with each other and perpendicular to a larger third. Each spring survives to varying extents beyond the other face; up to 60mm. Originally the springs may have had a barb on each side extending to within c. 8 or 9mm of the plate. A slide (or squeeze) key would have squeezed the barbs against the springs such that the bolt co…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded iron single-looped rectangular buckle of medieval or post-medieval date. The looped pin is extant. Any decoration is obscured by the extensive corrosion product. A similar buckle can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 95; ref. 425) and is dated to the 14th century, although a later date cannot be ruled out.

A corroded iron trident-shaped artefact of possible Roman date. The object has lost one of its side prongs. The central prong is enlarged (W.: 15.85mm) before tapering to a point. It has been bent in profile. The tang is solid and tapers in both length and thickness over c. 37mm. It has a rectangular cross-section. The artefact could have acted as a weapon as it seems somewhat over elaborate as an agricultural or fishing tool.

An incomplete artefact apparently with an iron core, around which, at one end, a copper-alloy sheathed terminal. The terminal is broadly oval in plan. From one side protrudes an iron element, highly corroded, slightly thicker than the terminal (at 8.8mm). In from this protrusion is a circular perforation with a slightly narrowed waist (min. dia.: 4.15mm). The hole is slightly off centre in both planes. The faces bevel from the top of the hole which forms the high point of both surfaces. Between the hole and the iron protrusion is a moulding whereby the height of the iron piece i…

The upper and lower surfaces of the bow are flat. The shank beyond is sub-square in cross-section (W.: 7.55mm) with a double collar moulding after c. 16mm. It continues with the same cross-section having narrowed to a width of c. 6.75mm. There is a diagonal loss above the bit. A corroded cast iron ensemble relating to a post-medieval sword belt. The group consists of a double-looped buckle with suspension loop - a sword belt hanger - and a hooked mount from which it would have hung.
The buckle is formed of a pair of conjoined 'D's. It is bevelled externally on its upper surface, bevelling echoed internally on the lower. Both outer edges have been bent upwards at an angle of around thirty degrees. The pin is missing. At one end of the pin bar is an integral suspension loop that protrudes forwards at right angles to the frame and outwards at an angle of …

A corroded iron artefact: a ?mount of probable medieval date. The object consists of a moulded quatrefoil element from one end of which protrudes a semi-circular section rod. The lower surface is flat and as such is assumed to have been mounted onto another object.

A corroded iron fetter probably from a set of Romano-British shackles. The object is of penannular form with recurving ‘eyes’ at the terminals (97 by 87.7mm). In profile the shackle is concave; a median band of rectangular section is enclosed within. Retained in each eye is a loop, one circular (ext. dia.: c. 73mm, int. dia.: c. 52mm), the other an elongated oval, bent at an obtuse angle (L.: c. 93mm, W.: c. 42mm). As such the artefact is similar in form to the Bavay-type as classified in Thompson (1994, 117ff.), and is therefore best classified as such. It is acknowledged tha…

A collection of fourteen iron nails found in association with Roman material. Thirteen are complete, with only one fragmentary example (not photographed). The nails have circular heads and square-sectioned shanks which taper to a point. They vary in length from 56 to 80mm. The diameters of the heads vary from 15.7 to 18.3mm. The shank diameters (taken just below the head) vary from 4.7 to 6.5mm. The artefacts have suffered very little corrosion or oxidisation.
