An incomplete cast copper-alloy plate brooch dating to the early-medieval period. Viking brooch similar to Hattatt (1989, 223; ref. 1700). Openwork lozenge form, moulded in Borre-style relief. Hinged pin (now missing). Scandinavian.
Jane Kershaw included this brooch in her study (2009). Scandinavian is most probable but it can't be confirmed.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman disc brooch of the 2nd century AD. In the centre of the brooch is a circular cell. It is difficult to tell from the illustration provided (see notes, below) whether or not this is filled; on similar brooches with this feature the central cell is often found to be empty (Hattatt 1989, 119). Around it are two fields of enamel, between which the divider is scalloped, in eight segments. The inner field had a red enamel inlay, judging from a trace; it is uncertain what colour the enamel in the outer field would have been. Within the arc of each of the e…

A worn cast copper-alloy brooch dating to early-medieval period. The brooch consists of a headplate which is square with rounded corners, arched bow and foot. Following old damage the head and foot are no longer on the same plane. The headplate is worn and abraded; all presence of any potential former knobs has been lost in old damage. On the reverse of the headplate is an abraded pin lug. The pin is missing. At the junction of headplate and bow is a pair of raised transverse ridges. The bow has a median ridge where two facets meet. It is otherwise undecorated. Before the bow drops dow…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy terret dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman periods. This comprises a section of the hoop with a decorative moulding. The attachment bar and rest of the hoop, which would have incorporated two more decorative mouldings, are missing. The bar is circular in section and c. 5.5mm in diameter. Just beyond the moulding there are a pair of circular recesses. From the comments accompanying the illustrations provided (see notes, below) they once contained red enamel inlays – a feature not uncommon on later Iron Age terrets. What is unusual about this …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy disc with a perforation in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. This is possibly a guard from a later medieval rondel dagger. The artefact is decorated unifacially, being plain on its reverse. The upper face features nine recessed cells in the shape of triangles with rounded corners. They appear from the illustration provided (see notes, below) to be of varying sizes; six of them are still inlaid with blue glass. The hole starts in the centre of the disc and travels towards the edge over 12mm; the cells are not present in this area of the upper face. The …

A sub-annular object, probably of cast copper-alloy, although this is not specified on the paper record provided (see notes, below). It is probably a medieval annular brooch, as such dating between the 13th and 15th centuries. It has an internal diameter of c. 21mm. On the face visible on the illustration the frame is decorated with tranverse grooves. There is a hole in the frame which would have held the pin which is now missing. Opposite is a bed which protrudes by c. 2.5mm from the circumference; this would have held the pin with the aid of an incision of c. 4.5mm on the inside of …

The notes accompanying the illustration provided (see notes, below) state that this object was identified at the British Museum as an Anglo-Saxon gilt-bronze cruciform roundel attachment of the 7th or 8th century AD. It is circular and decorated unfacially. A pair of incised border rings are intersected by what appear to be irregularly sized drop-shaped elements whose pointed ends meet the edge. The rounded ends of these elements tend towards the centre of the disc in which there is a small circular attachment hole. Such a disc may have been mounted on a box, satchel on an item of clo…

An unusual sub-rectangular object, possibly a crude early Roman imperial period fist and phallus amulet, perhaps even an individually crafted object based upon this object type. The images provided (see notes, below) show an object with one shorter edge rounded and the other perhaps formerly squared (it has since suffered losses as a result of old damage). Unfortunately, the identification provided with the illustrations did not give a material for this object. One can identify four fingers crudely and irregularly delineated on the 'fist', but no presence of the thumb, perhaps due t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy Roman finger-ring. The finger-ring is polygonal in profile with eight external facets. Each face appears from the illustration provided (see notes, below) to be undecorated (with the exception of one which appears to feature a transverse groove) and of approximately the same length. The ring has a rectangular section. It is circular internally with a diameter of c. 16mm. It can be classified as an regular, octagonal Henig type IX/Guiraud type 9a finger-ring. Crummy (1983, 49; ref. 1788) notes that polygonal hoops tend to be 4th century AD in date; Johns (1997, 41)…

A very worn cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch fragment dating from the late Iron Age to early Roman periods (25-65 AD). It consists of the pin. On the paper record (see notes, below), this is represented rather thickly. The curve is more pronounced as it turns into the spring mechanism. This latter now only appears vestigial; the bow, catchplate and the rest of the spring mechanism have all been lost.

A worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman T-shape brooch of the ‘Sawfish’ type. A ‘mature’ example in that the flat bow is serrated along its whole length, in this case with five obvious pairs of teeth. The bow tapers a little towards the foot, from a maximum bow width of c. 9mm, where it terminates in a prominent forward-facing oval knob. On the reverse at the knob end is a trapezoidal catchplate which extends c. 15mm up the bow. At the head there is a small, worn sub-rectangular element beyond the wings. This is probably the remnant of a broken head/chain loop. The wings …

An ?incomplete cast copper-alloy 2nd-century Roman brooch best classified as a composite plate brooch. The main body of the brooch is circular (diameter 18mm), off which there are two protrusions above and below. The lower protrusion depicted on the image (right) is c. 8mm long, and tapers from c. 6mm to a width of c. 2.5mm after c. 4.5mm. On the reverse of this element is a sub-triangular catchplate that survives well. The upper protrusion opposite is now crescentic, but was possibly once a small loop (c. 6mm in diameter). On its reverse is a ?doubly-pierced lug which holds the exta…

A cast copper-alloy artefact of probable Roman date, given contemporary finds found in the vicinity, possibly a cavalry harness fitting. An object sub-rectangular in plan with abraded edges. At one end this expands from c. 11mm to a raised collar, c. 15mm wide. Beyond the collar a downwards hook rises in profile, tapering in width from c. 9mm to c. 4mm. Text accompanying the image provided (see notes, below) suggests that the object appears not to be broken. At the end opposite the curved hook is a circular rivet hole, c. 4-5mm from the edge. An incomplete, corroded cast copper-alloy and iron artefact in the form of a finger bent round at one of the joints such that the fingertip is perpendicular to the main section. The fingertip depicts a defined, sub-square finger nail uppermost. It tapers slightly, and is the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners when viewed from the front. After 15.6mm internally (27.4mm externally) the tip turns and becomes the main body of the artefact which is of square section. This latter is 59.5mm long internally (71.4mm externally). A cast copper-alloy artefact in the form of a hand holding a small spherical object between thumb and forefinger, and emerging from a square pedestal cuff with a flared top and stepped base with double corded decoration. Unfortunately, the images provided (see notes, below) do not show the cross-section of the object. A concomitant description, however, states that the underside of the hole features a circular hole filled with lead. As this description goes on to state, attributing a usage to this object is problematic. Suggestions included a tripod and a key handle, although no par…

A cast silver penannular finger-ring with enlarged snake-head terminals dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD. It has internal measurements of 17 x 15mm. The hoop is described as circular in section in the paper record (see notes, below), although it appears plano-convex from the illustration; it is therefore rather thick. According to C Johns' (1997, 36) typology, this example can be classified as either a Type Bi or Bii finger-ring. These types have two confronted animal-head terminals, and are characterised by either naturalistic (Bi) or stylised (Bii) snake-head representations. Th…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy equal-ended Roman plate brooch of the 2nd century AD. The brooch is broadly of the form of a rectangle with rounded corners. Just off each surviving corner on the longer sides are three protrusions with rounded ends (old damage has deprived the brooch of the fourth). These protrude for c. 5mm and are c. 4.4mm wide. Each extant protrusion is decorated with what appears from the illustration (see notes, below) to be a punched ring and dot motif: there are three concentric rings in each. Protruding from the shorter sides of the rectangle are flanges whic…

A cast copper-alloy Roman nail cleaner probably dating to the third or fourth century AD. The suspension loop is c. 9.4mm in width, with a circular perforation c. 3.7mm in diameter. This loop is in the same plane as the leaf-shaped shaft and is of an elaborate form consisting of a semicircle above an element of the same width terminating in points. Below this is a narrow beginning to the shaft 3.6mm wide and 10.4mm in length. In the centre of this strip an element protrudes horizontally, on both sides. This latter echoes the suspension loop in that it features a small pointed element …

A cast copper-alloy belt mount of Roman date. The mount consists of a cental circular element (diameter 13.4mm) flanked on either side by triangles which flare out from the circle; the circular element truncates the corners of the triangles. The illustration (see notes, below) seems to show chamfered edges on the front face of the artefact, excepting its four corners: these therefore take on the appearance of knops. In the internal angles of the triangular elements are four circular rivet holes; these have all lost their rivets. The reverse has not been depicted but was presumably fla…
