Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post-medieval 'crotal' (animal) bell cast in copper alloy, broken into two unequal parts (17th century). The upper half has two sound holes c. 2mm in diameter, both not fully filed. As a result of old damage the bell has broken through one of those holes in a ragged break extending to each side to the two sound holes on the lower hemisphere. These latter abut the central casting seam and are far larger (c. 7-8mm). They are joined together by a slot and are perpendicular to those on the upper half. On both sides of the slot is a moulded cherub with a face flanked by wings that also…

Mint unclear. The fragment consists of an area around the centre of the coin, perhaps representing a fifth of the original flan size. It is possible that the coin was deliberately cut down. This coin has been considered for Sam Moorhead's corpus for RIC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast single-looped copper-alloy buckle frame of medieval date. The small buckle frame is oval with a lipped outer edge. The pin bar is offset and narrowed; the loop of the wire pin survives in place. The rest of the pin is missing. The upper surface is bevelled externally; the lower surface is flat. The lip features a central, transverse pin groove. The frame has a dark-green patina with some patches lighter as a result of corrosion. There are suggestions of fine file marks all over the frame. Buckle frames of similar form can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 75; …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly corroded, incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. The frame is formed of a pair of ovals which incurve towards the pin bar. The upper surface of the artefact is bevelled; the lower surface mirrors this with its shallow internal bevelling. Viewed in profile one can see that one loop has been bent upwards at an angle of around 60 degrees, accentuated at the outer edge. This is probably as a result of use exacerbated by old damage. The bar has a trapezoidal cross-section; the pin itself is missing. The upper surface is decorated with a mo…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a post-medieval spherical animal bell ('crotal') cast in copper alloy. The fragment consists of part of the lower half, with ragged breaks and one broadly straight edge - the sound slot - unfiled at one point. A shield shaped cartouche abuts the slot and bears a T-shaped, possible 'founder's hammer' motif. Such a mark suggests a late 16th- or early 17th-century date for this artefact (cf. Bailey 1995, 40-41). The lower half beyond is decorated with a leaf pattern, with fronds converging on the cartouche. The bell has a mid-grey patina with areas of off-white corrosion …

Object type: CAME
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded lead sprue fragment from the casting of post-medieval window cames. It is formed of a strip with three H-shaped protrusions (c. 8.2 by c. 5.8mm each), the beginnings of the cames. The strip has a hollowed lower surface and folded 'skirt' to one side. By reference to similar waste from London a 17th-century date can be suggested (Egan 2005, 147; ref. 782); this would seem to be corroborated by finds made in the vicinity recorded on this database.

A cast copper-alloy fragment probably from a post-medieval buckle. It is a rod broken at both ends which are also curved round slightly in the same direction. The lower surface is flat while the upper is decorated with moulded lozenges divided by trios of transverse ridge. The lozenges have the effect of being formed by cutting the corners from triangles. The artefact has corroded to a variable mid-green colour.

A corroded, hollow, cast copper-alloy pommel probably from a post-medieval dagger. The artefact is sub-trefoilate in emerging from a narrowed base which is circular in profile. The base has been broken at various points as a result of old damage that has resulted in losses. The circular core continues through the object with a central perforation through the circular top that travels all the way through. The core is decorated with a central pair of longitudinal ridges on both wide sides. The side wings have flat sides at an angle of about 140 degrees from the base. The ends of th…

A damaged and broken cast copper-alloy medieval buckle frame, possibly of the composite type with forked spacer. The oval frame has a central, pointed lip and possible recess to act as pin rest on the inner face. The frame is bevelled externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. In cross-section it is triangular. The frame has been narrowed at the spacer for the pin and has broken through at this weak point; the pin is missing. The frame is thickened at this point and the narrowed part circular in cross-section. The spacer barely survives, if at all. The buckle frame ha…
