Broad period: ROMAN
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Published
A fragmentary copper-alloy Roman initial T-shaped brooch dating to AD 50-150, now just comprising the upper bow and head, the latter now broken.
One of the wings is seemingly intact, while the other is broken at its junction with the bow. On the reverse, the broken wing is also abraded revealing the channel for the axis bar; the pin, of course, is missing. The extant wing is broadly circular, though squared off at the top. Retained within it are the remains of a probably iron bar, as suggested by traces of iron corrosion product in a longitudinal groove …

An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy brooch of unusual form (c. 1st to 3rd century). It consists of a long, thin trapezoidal plate connected by an angled section to the head, probably for a hinged pin. It is unclear to what extent the head survives; the brooch is broken at the start of a section that is expanded slightly from that from which it extends. It may have developed into a tubular head to retain an axis bar for a hinged pin; there are hints of a central pin slot. As noted, a small angled section connects this to the plate; it is set at an angle of just over 45 degrees.&n…

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy strap-mounted and skirted terret ring. Only the base of the main ring now survives, with slightly more surviving one side of the skirt. It is broadly of D-shaped cross-section, with flat interior with rounded corners. It is moulded externally into a series of segments of differing sizes; not enough of the ring survives to discern a pattern. Below the main ring is a waist below which the hollow skirt expands. The skirt was apparently formed of two 'leaves', one now highly abraded. The other main part of the skirt is sub triangular. Set below, the…

An incomplete Iron Age La Tène III type/ Nauheim derivative brooch dating to the period c. AD 10-100 (Plouviez period E). While much of the brooch survives, the integral pin is missing, as is the catch-plate.
At the top of the bow is the head of the brooch. The head was probably made of four coils of circular cross-section, two either side of the bow, but the internal coil that would have developed into the bow has been lost to an old break. The coils on the other side of the bow may have been squashed flat. When viewed head uppermost, the first coil to the left of the pin and …

An incomplete white metal coated copper-alloy Roman belt mount (strap-fitting) of 1st-century date. Around 30% of the original mount has been lost to old breaks, at one short end, but also the adjacent longer sides. At the other end, the short side is seemingly intact, with a raised transverse strip; the recessed reverse may have retained a separate rod. The mount is formed of a thin, pressed sheet plate a raised concentric circle design having covered most of the field. This was formed of a central pellet in a dished recess with a raised ring around, at approximately the same hei…
