A fairly small flint Acheulian handaxe of a white-grey flint dating to the Lower Palaeolithic. It is broadly cordate in shape, but with a flattened tip. The object has a regular profile, more raised on one surface compared to the other. It is covered by removals with the exception of a strip of cortex running up the centre of the butt of the higher surface. There is a small patch of cortex in addition on the other surface, off centre, towards the butt. The butt itself is somewhat flattened. The removals are fairly crisp suggesting that this is not a glacial deposit. The handaxe is dar…

Fragment of a pointed Lower Palaeolithic handaxe with only around half of the original tool remaining. The point is rounded and the sides expand in a regular fashion, showing no obvious signs of returning before the break. The break is diagonal with removals extending far into one of the surfaces, it appears to have occurred in antiquity. There is considerable iron staining over a lighter underlying flint. There is some slight battering to one side in particular.

Workflow stage: Published
A small 'pointed' handaxe with some iron staining over a light-grey underlying flint. There are some small patches of cortex, two on one face, two on one edge, within cavities. These, and a hairline crack on the other face and a small patch of mineralisation below, suggest that the nodule from which this tool was made had to be utilised despite its flaws. The sides taper and thin gradually from the rounded butt end to a point that has survived well. There is some slight battering to the sides as well as an angular removal, further evidence of the flaws in the nodule.

A small sub-cordate handaxe, iron-stained a generally deep orange-brown colour, with some underlying grey/yellow showing through at removal points. There appears to a very small patch of cortex remaining on the (probably) ventral face; the object is otherwise covered in removals. The distal end is squared off, presumably an old break to a pointed tip, but of antiquity as it is as stained as the rest of the artefact. The proximal end appear deliberately flattened. The sides curve to a maximum width from the base; from the widest point it tapers gradually to a width of c. 20mm at the po…

A large piece of worked flint of uncertain function. It has a top and one large curved face perhaps where it has been broken off another extremely large nodule of flint. The other faces each have a number of removals of varying depth and angle but it is unclear what the item was intended to be. It has been water smoothed. It seems more likely that this is an unfinished object or a core. It has a circular fossil in one face. The colour of the flint is a medium brown with traces of yellow grey and speckled white patina.
