Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint end-and-side scraper of light/mid-grey flint of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 - 1500 BC). It has been made on a primary flake, described as such since the dorsal face is covered in cortex with the exception of invasive areas of working along the sides. At the proximal end is a striking platform, with a bulbar scar, partially removed by a later flake. On the ventral face the bulb is shallow, as are the ripples, and the surface is slightly rough towards the distal end. The flake has a shallow S-shaped profile. There is short, scaled, (semi-)abrupt retouch to b…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint end scraper of light/dark-grey flint of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 - 1500 BC). Made on a small tertiary flake with no cortex surviving. At the proximal end is a small striking platform, with a significant bulbar scar. On the ventral face the bulb is shallow, as are the ripples. The flake has an S-shaped profile. The dorsal face is notably smooth; this may have been due to natural removals. There is invasive flaking on a diagonal protrusion at the proximal end of the ventral face. It would appear, therefore, unusually, that the proximal end is here being u…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint end scraper of dark-grey flint of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 - 1500 BC). Made on a secondary flake with cortex covering most of the dorsal face, with the exception of the proximal end. At the proximal end is a small striking platform, with a significant bulbar scar. On the ventral face the bulb is shallow, as are the ripples. As implied, the dorsal face has very few removals: these cluster around the proximal end and are quite abrupt, working around a natural flaw. It would appear, therefore, unusually, that the proximal end is here being used as a scrape…

Workflow stage: Published
A flint horseshoe-shaped scraper of mid/dark-grey flint of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 - 1500 BC). Made on a tertiary flake with no surviving cortex. At the proximal end is a small striking platform, partially removed by old damage. On the ventral face the bulb is shallow, and the ripples travel diagonally. The dorsal face has two main scars creating steep sides either side of a flat median ridge. Around half of the distal edge has been retouched, quite crudely and abruptly, creating a curved working edge, with finer retouch above. The surface of the scraper has s…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A crude side scraper formed from a tertiary debitage flint flake of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The scraper is formed from a leaf-shaped flake with a notched void at the distal end: this is edged with cortex on the dorsal face and is probably a natural void. The ventral face shows conchoidal ripples and the bulb of percussion, alongside a small bulbar scar. The dorsal face has three main longitudinal removals in the same plane as the ventral, the central one being far wider. A long edge, the lefthand edge on the dorsal face, has been retouched creating a basic cutting/scr…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A retouched tertiary flake probably Neolithic in date. It is broadly of elongated trapezoidal form with a 'butt' of straight sides, the side having tapered gradually from the wide end. The retouch varies on the dorsal face and is abrupt to one side, and more gradual at the other and the wide end. The shape of the flake is reminiscent of transverse arrowheads of the tranchet type but the cutting edge seems too thick for this purpose, though it may have been truncated. The function of this flake therefore cannot be given with precision.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Knapped tertiary flint flake, undiagnostic in date and therefore dated from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age. It is incomplete as there is some recent damage to its edges. There is a prominent bulb on the ventral face with an adjacent scar. The dorsal face features numerous longitudinal removals generally from the proximal end. The flint is grey, stained brown. It measures 34.9mm long by 28.2mm wide and 6.8mm thick; it weighs 6.36 grams.

A sub-rectangular flint secondary flake of probable Neolithic date, longer than it is wide, with retouch to an edge. There is a low bulb of percussion beyond a transverse platform, with rippling extending up the face. The dorsal face features a main angled removal on one half, in the same plane and same direction as the main, ventral strike. The other half is similarly angled but covered in cortex. Its cross-section is therefore sub triangular. There is another smaller removal at the middle at the proximal end. There appears to be medial retouch on the dorsal face's left-hand side. Lo…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A sub-rectangular flint tertiary flake of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date, long and narrow. There is a bulb of percussion and bulbar scar beyond a transverse platform, with subtle rippling extending up the face. The dorsal face features three main blade-like removals, all in the same plane and seemingly the same direction as the main, ventral strike. One is central, with those to the sides bevelled. At the proximal end there are further long removals to the sides of the central removal; these appear to be in the other direction. The flake is far thicker at the distal end an…

A sub-rectangular flint tertiary flake of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date, long and narrow. There is a bulb of percussion beyond a transverse platform, with rippling extending up the face. The dorsal face features some three main blade like removals, all in the same plane and same direction as the main, ventral strike. One is central, with those to the sides bevelled. Losses at the distal end may be old breaks or flaws. The losses to the sides, though numerous, are inconsistent and do not seem to constitute definite retouch. A tertiary waste flake of probable Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. The flake is an irregular quadrilateral shape with a diagonal break at the distal end. The ventral face is curved and smooth with evident ridges down its length due to a heavy strike. There is some bulbar scarring. The dorsal face is broadly flattened as a result of numerous multi-directional removals, some breaking off due to flaws in the flint, especially at the proximal end. There is no obvious retouching. The flake has a stained translucent orange/red colour with light-grey bands with a small area of cortex o…

A tertiary flake of probable Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date, reworked for use probably as a scraper. The flake is an irregular quadrilateral shape. The ventral face is curved and smooth with evident ridges down its length due to a heavy strike. The striking platform is obscured by scars and losses due to flaws in the flint; the bulb is now unclear. The dorsal face has two major and two minor multi-directional removals giving it a broadly triangular cross section. There is possible retouch to the right hand dorsal edge/lefthand ventral edge for conversion into a basic side scrape…

A side/end scraper of Neolithic date formed of a fairly long flake. The ventral face is curved and smooth. The dorsal face has large, bevelled removals giving it a broadly triangular cross-section. The longitudinal removals to turn it into an end/side scraper are abrupt, unusually at the thickened proximal end, and more to one side to avoid the bulb of percussion. The flake is a light-/mid-grey colour, with off-white patination some small patches of iron staining.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flake of probable Neolithic date, retouched for use probably as an end scraper. The flake is an irregular quadrilateral shape with irregular, angular fractures at the proximal end as a result of thermal fracturing. The ventral face is curved and smooth. The dorsal face has few, large removals apart from finer removals at the distal end, some abrupt, to turn the flake into a rudimentary end scraper. The flake is a light-/mid-grey colour, with some small patches of iron staining at the ridges.

A large flake removed from its nodule due to thermal fracturing since flaked for use as a unifacial cutting tool. The flake is sub-crescentic in form, with some curving on its external and internal edges. The ventral/internal face has few removals, including a 'hinged' one as a result of the thermal fracturing. The external surface is c. 80% cortical with some natural removals at one end. On the other end, extending round part of the curved external edge is some flaking to make a basic cutting tool. The internal surface has some iron staining over a light-grey underlying flint. The fl…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A mid-brown flint flake, probably a blank from an unfinished leaf-shaped arrowhead of Neolithic date. It has invasive removals on the ventral surface at the proximal end, which have removed the bulb and form a crude leaf-shaped point. Further slight abrupt edge-retouch curving around the distal end can be interpreted as a platform from which invasive pressure flakes could have been removed. The leaf-shaped form of the blank and the curving retouched platform around the distal end indicate that a leaf-shaped arrowhead was most likely the intended product; leaf-shaped arrowheads date f…
