Description: Silver lace tag with a cylindrical body, slightly tapering from one end to the other. The wider end is cut into V shapes which could be bent inwards to grip the lace; there is one circular perforation here, probably a rivet hole. One quarter of a Portugese coin, possibly a half Moeda with a value of 2000 Reis, of King John IV (1630-136) or King John V (Ioannes) of Portugal 1706-50. One Moeda or Moedore meaning 'Port. moeda da ouro' or 'money of gold,' is normally worth 4000 reis, this type of coin is also sometimes called a crusado or cruzado because of the cross on the reverse, 1 crusado is worth 400 reis so our half moidore which is worth 2000 reis is 5 crusados. The mint mark on the reverse is 'B' - one B between each two arms of the cross.

Silver Roman denarius of Crispina dating to c. AD 178-88 (Reece Period 9), VENVS, Venus standing left holding apple and gathering drapery on left shoulder. Mint of Rome. RIC III, p. 399, no. 286a. Crispina’s coinage was traditionally dated to c. AD 178-182, but more recent research suggests that she was probably not exiled to Capri until c. AD 188. Therefore, we date her coins to c. AD 178-188; although some coins probably date to AD 178-80, we cannot be sure which they are so all Crispina’s coins are assigned to Reece Period 9 (AD 180-192).

Copper alloy mount or strap fitting, very probably dating from the Roman period, c. 1st-4th century. The mount is incomplete, but survives in fair condition. It is flat circular in shape with what looks like two lugs (possibly a broken rectangular loop) on the reverse. It is possible that it had some kind of enamelled or inlaid decoration on the obverse, but none of that remains: it is plan without any marks. If the reverse was a rectangular loop its function could have been that of a strap or belt slide. If the two lus were separate it may have been a decorative mount attached to lea…
