Copper alloy buckle plate dating from the medieval period, c. 13th-14th century. The buckle plate survives nearly complete, with two broken loops on the left, which would have held the buckle. The plate itself is flat rectangular, with a cast or stamped decoration on the obverse. This is a walkding quadruped left, possibly a lion or wolf. The obverse of the plate may have been gilded but none of the gilding remains.

An incomplete medieval cast copper alloy buckle, dating to circa AD1300-1400. The buckle is D-shaped in plan with an expanded outer edge and narrowed strap bar. The front face is decorated with a linear design which frames a horizontal notch for the pin rest. The pin and plate are now missing. The reverse is undecorated. The object has a light to mid-green coloured well developed patina. Whitehead (2003) illustrates similar buckles on page 20, No's 66-68. All are dated to circa AD 1300-1400. Whitehead, R. (2003) Buckles 1250-1800. Greenlight Publishing, Witham.

Copper alloy buckle frame dating from the post-medieval period, c. AD1620-80. Trapezoidal double looped buckle with a pointed triangular outer edge flanked by knops and a knop at the end of its strap bar (cf Whitehead 1996 no. 520). An incised line follows the inside of the outer edge, and is intersected by another which crosses it at right angles, perhaps marking a pin rest. A grey tint may suggest the buckle was tinned overall. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1620-1680.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval single loop buckle with integral plate dating from c.AD1250-1400. Description: D-shaped frame with integral plate, the plate has segmented narrowed sides framed by transverse ridges. Three rivet holes go through the plate, with two smaller rivets still in place, held by two small copper alloy sheets on the reverse, possibly washers. The third hole, presumably for the pin, is empty as the pin is missing now. Discussion: Whitehead (1996, 34 fig 196 and 198) illustrates two examples with similar features to this example and dates them to…

An incomplete copper-alloy late medieval copper rectangular buckle with a complete pin, but missing locking arm, dating from the 14th-15th century. The upper and lower sides of the frame are widened about one third of the way along from the inner edge and drilled to hold the seperate spindle for the pin. The pin is cast seperately from copper alloy and has a solid tube that goes over the spindle from which projects a long, flat triangular point. The pin is incomplete, with the very tip missing. There would have been a separate locking bar attached to one end of the spindle, out…

Copper alloy buckle dating from the later post-medieval or early modern period, that is c. AD1660-1720. The buckle is incomplete: only the frame remains: the central spindle and pin are missing. They have been made from iron/rolled sheet and thus, being more fragile, have corroded away/ broken off. The buckle frame itself is rectangular in shape, with rounded off corners, and flat oval in cross-section. The frame is undecorated except for some floral moulded and moulded knops to the left and right of the central axis bar.

Cast copper alloy incomplete spectacle buckle dating from the 16th-17th century. The two loops are square sided oval with expanded outer edges; there is damage to one of the loops and a small chuck is missing. There is a projecting off-set bet between the loops. The pin is missing now, but it would have been made from sheet metal wrapped around the central bar. This buckle is of post Medieval type and likely to date from c. 1550-1650.

Slightly damaged cast copper alloy spectacle or double-loop oval buckle frame that is plano-convex in section with a bevelled inner edge and a recessed pin bar with moulded knops at either end of the bar. The pin is still present. There appears to be traces of black lacquer on parts of the upper face of the frame where some of the original surface remains. The central strap fitting is still present, folded around the spindle. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 54, No.308, which is dated from c.1500-1650.

Cast copper alloy sub-rectangular single loop buckle with concave sides with bifid mouldings and a narrowed strap bar. The pin is missing. The front of the buckle has a moulded pin notch consisting of a hollow raised V-shape with oblique grooves on either side of the V. There are a few patches of black lacquer surviving on the upper surface of the frame suggesting that the buckle was coated to protect it from corrosion during wear. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a very similar example on page 28, no.146 which is slightly smaller but has the same decoration and moulded pin notch. He…

An unidentified cast copper alloy fitting, probably part of a buckle, of later early medieval or medieval date 1000- 1100 AD. The fitting is highly decorative but its function is unknown (though it was probably part of a buckle). Two small rivet holes are present as is an axis bar, this could suggest function as a locking plate, strap end or possibly brooch. The artefact is sub-recangular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The reverse face is flat and undecorated. Two integrally cast D shaped lugs project from the narrow edge; these are pierced and an iron axis bar extends between…

A complete bent copper-alloy spur buckle of medieval date, c. AD1250-1400. It is complete except for the pin which is missing. Ferrous residue around the frame suggest that it was an iron pin. It is bent at a right angle. The spur buckle has a single looped oval frame with a narrowed and recessed bar and an integral plate. The plate is sub-rectangular with an expanded square panel to the narrower end from which a forward facing hook projects. Two rivet holes are present on the plate, one to either end.
