Lead alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the 13th-15th century AD. The weight is circular in shape awith a central hole for the spindle. It is roughly rectangular in cross-section, with very worn surfaces. It was decorated with a very untidy moulded line and dot decoration. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical or cylindrical in shape a…

A copper crux pellet penny minted between 1451 and 1484, during the reign of James III. The coin may have been valued at three Scottish pence. The reverse has a cross within a quatrefoil. There are pellets on the cusps with nothing in the spandrel. The Latin inscription 'crux pellit omne crimen' translates as: 'the cross drives away all sin'. The words in the inscription are taken from a 4th century hymn by Prudentius. The coins are known as the 'crux pellit' issue from the first two words of the inscription. The coin is 17mm in diameter and weighs 0.6g.

Probably a very worn Roman copper-alloy folding knife handle dating from the 1st-4th century AD. The object is extremely worn with a much abraded and worn surface overall. None of the detailed mouldings survive on the surface. Comparing this fragment to other knife handles recorded on the database it is possible that the lower two thirds of the handle take the form of a stylised, three-dimensional feline figure, the body, neck and head of which together form an 'S' shape. The head faces forwards and would have had well moulded features, including an open mouth, pointed-oval eyes,…
