Complete end scraper of conventional form; made from a secondary, hard hammer struck flake of glossy black flint with some inclusions, steeply retouched at the distal end to form the semi-circular scraping edge, small patch of sandy coloured thin cortex extant to one lateral side, showing the outside curve of the flint nodule this was struck from. A very useful tool in the initial preparation of fresh hides for tanning, effective in removing the subcutaneous fat from just below the surface of the skin. Neolithic, 4,000 to 2,350 BC.

Thin, ovoid scraper made from a large primary flake, all flake scars appear to be soft hammer struck to the dorsal face only, the flakes have not been able to remove the thin, weathered cortex, though a very acute angle has been achieved along the longer side, one end is steeper and more of a conventional scraper form, the opposing end and the “back” are of rougher knapping and finishing, this may suggest that this scraper was hafted, though this is not conclusive. Brown patination, single recent chip to the side of the ventral face reveals the flint was originally mottled …

Secondary, hard hammer struck flake, of brown/orange patinated flint with sandy grey coloured cortex extant to the distal end of the dorsal face, the cortex is removed towards the proximal end by two previously struck hinged flake scars, the distal end itself is steeply retouched in the conventional fashion to form the semi-circular scraping edge, both lateral edges are left without retouch, bulb transversely snapped and missing. Neolithic, 4,000 to 2,350 BC.

Tertiary, hard hammer struck flake with semi-steep retouch to the dorsal face of the distal end to form an elongated (possibly hafted?) end scraper, of unpatinated slightly mottled dark grey flint, both lateral edges are unretouched and left sharp near to the platform. Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4,000 to 700 BC.

End scraper of relatively large size, made from a secondary, hard hammer struck flake of mottled grey flint with thin, worn, pale sandy coloured cortex now with some small spotty iron stains towards the proximal end.  The steep retouch is confined to the distal end forming the neat semi-circular scraping edge and the sharper (non-cortical) side, presumably to slightly blunt it. Neolithic, given the size, probably early, 4,000 to 3,000 BC.

Hard hammer struck primary sub-discoidal flake, of frosted white patinated flint, the original colour of the flint shows as being dark grey on the damaged areas, the cortex is a dirty off-white and brown colour. Steep retouch to the distal end only with most of the length recently damaged, as is the striking platform. Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4,000 – 700 BC.

Three pieces of black flint, unpatinated. Tertiary end scraper of conventional form, hard hammer struck with steep retouch to the distal end, now slightly damaged, the retouch is less invasive to the lateral edges. 54 x 37.5 x 10 mm. 23 g. Side scraper on a semi-hard hammer struck secondary flake, one side of the dorsal face has off-white cortex extant with a section of fossilised Belemnite shell. The bulb is crushed, and one side of the distal end (opposing the cortex) is steeply retouched to form the main scraping edge. 57 x 35 x 10 mm. 22 g. Tertiary hard hammer struck flake wi…

Very large end scraper worked from a secondary, hard hammer struck flake, of pale grey to dark grey mottled/layered flint with many coarse inclusions to the paler flint, there are a few iron scrapes and spots from contact with agricultural machinery, the remaining patch of cortex is thin, weathered and now light brown with a light grey band just below the surface. The scraping edge is formed by quite large, steep flake removals to the dorsal face around the edges following the curvature of the initial flake, one lateral side is neatly curved and continues the scraping edge almost to th…

Hard hammer struck end scraper on a tertiary flake, of pale grey, mottled flint now patinated a sandy pale buff colour. The ventral face has a large, pronounced bulb of percussion with no bulbar scar and an exaggerated ridge set below the initial swelling of the bulb, the dorsal face is steeply retouched, mostly to the distal end to form the main scraping edge, the sides are lightly trimmed in a similar fashion to remove the sharp edges up to the platform. Early Neolithic, 4,000 to 3,000 BC.

Hard hammer struck, secondary flake with the distal end steeply retouched to form the convex scraping edge in the conventional manner, a small patch of off-white cortex remains extant to the dorsal face of the distal end, the flint has been burnt in the past, causing and unusual concentric effect in the flint; it is off-white/light grey with radiating mid-grey “lines” to the ventral face, the dorsal face is less pronounced with the colour being more very pale grey. Small hairline radiating cracks also follow the heat damage to both faces. Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 4,00…

Three hard hammer struck flakes, two are end scrapers, the third is a simple flake. Tertiary flake, steeply retouched at the distal end to form the convex scraping edge, one side is also similarly retouched along its entire length with a shallow notch (c. 9.5 mm long, 2 mm deep) just below the platform. The flint is dark grey and has a very faint lighter patination. Recent chip to one side of the distal end. 54 x 31.5 x 9 mm, 17 g. Secondary flake, steeply retouched to the distal end to form the convex scraping edge, the retouch becomes less severe on the sides as it appr…

Sub-discoidal double ended scraper, knapped from a broad, sub-trapezoidal sectioned, soft hammer struck tertiary flake, the bulb of percussion has been removed by the steep retouch to the constricted end, the broader end is similarly retouched, forming the slightly asymmetrical convex scraping edge. The steeper angled lateral edge has two remnants of flake scars that terminated in slight hinges, these were struck while the blank for this was still attached to the core, this edge seems to have been blunted to some degree by steep retouch too, probably to serve as a “back” to…

End scraper, steeply retouched on a tertiary hard hammer struck flake, the platform has been facetted before being struck, the “blank” flake is broad and flat with the platform almost at 90 degrees to the ventral face, both lateral edges have been retouched to form a constriction; gently flaring out towards the semi-circular scraping edge of conventional form, this is constriction is very unusual and would suggest that this piece was hafted, similar to the manner of an Inuit scraper: Inuite Eskimo hafted end scraper. Thick, hard hammer struck primary flake of unpatinated mottled grey flint with some rusty iron scrapes to both faces, the dorsal is mostly thinly cortical with steep retouch to the end and one side (end and side scraper) of the flake, forming the primary scraping edges, the retouch extends to one side of the platform but not beyond. The bulb of percussion is not pronounced due to the rounded angles of the core at the striking point though there is a bulbal scar directly below the point of impact. Early Neolithic, 4,000 to 3,000 BC.

Collection of scattered flints from field. Seven conventional end scrapers, six of which are secondary, one tertiary, all with abrupt, steep retouch to the distal ends, two are only minimally retouched with small flake removals. All are fresh looking, unpatinated/lightly patinated flint. Largest: 54 x 38 x 12 mm. 25 g. Smallest (tertiary): 29 x 35 x 8 mm. 9 g. Total weight for all scrapers: 111 g. One large mottled light grey “blade” terminating in a hinge at the distal end was recovered, this is a primary flake, the two planes to the dorsal face are old thermal (frost) …

Secondary, semi-hard hammer struck flake from a convex protuberance from a nodule of flint, the flake is of plano-convex section and almost circular plan, of dark grey flint with a paler inclusions to both faces, the surface is slightly patinated faint pale grey with a white patch to the ventral face at the distal end, the flake has been steeply retouched to one side to form the scraping edge.
