An oval shaped lead weight with a length of iron wire protruding by 5.5mm from one end and from the iron corrosion it most likely protruded the other end too. The lead itself measures 37.6mm and appears to have a vertical seam where the lead edges were joined together. The weight has a creamy patina and of uncertain date but probably Post Medieval c.1500 - 1800AD. Similar to Bailey (2001) 32 no.9.

A crude weight of unknown date formed by wrapping a sheet of lead around a continuous length of iron. The lead is marginally narrower at the top then flares slightly at the bottom. The iron at the top is rectangular in section (6.9mm) and bent over at 90°, maybe to form a suspension hook. At the base, the iron is wider (11.2mm), protrudes by 8.2mm from the lead and has snapped off making it impossible to ascertain whether this end was also hooked. The weight has a creamy patina and the iron has much corrosion.

Collection of 5 crudely cast, lead weights of unknown date. They are all flat and disc shaped with a small, central perforations. On one, the hole is quite square on the flat side and circular on the other. Both sides are undecorated. It is possible that the larger three may have been used as spindle whorls. The smaller ones may have been attached to nets for birding, rabbiting or fishing.

One side has what could be a large letter 'S' but it could equally be a snake or even a crude bird with a long neck with something on its head. Several pellets also decorate this face. The back has worn away too much to see what the design was and just a pellet and line coming from it remains. The token measures 29.7mm diameter, 1.9mm thickness and weighs 9.7g. An ovoid, slightly convex hooked mount, possibly a sword belt hanger of Post Medieval date (c1600). Two iron rivets remain in place 8.5mm from either end. Object type: HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably Post Medieval in date this iron tool may be a sack or bale hook. The rectangular section hook part does not bend round enough for it to work efficiently as a suspension hook. This then leads up to a hexagonal section vertical shaft ending in a tri-lobate terminal. Other examples of sack/bale hooks have small wooden handles but this one would not have had one as the protruding point would have been too uncomfortable to the worker. The cross piece of the terminal fits comfortably between the index and middle finger for a secure grip. Probably 1500 - 1800 AD.
