A rectangular lead block decorated on each surface with large ring-and-dot motifs. Each end has a single ring-and-dot stamped motif. The long faces have one, two and three ring-and-dot motifs stamped, the groups of three being on opposing sides. The patina is a light grey. A function for this artefact is as yet uncertain. Gaming piece is a possibility, although a dice is less likely as the sides do not have sides featuring numbers from 1 - 6. A decorated weight is also highly likley. In terms of date, both Roman and Saxon gaming pieces and weights commonly use the ring-and-dot m…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete lead pilgrims badge, or secular badge. Folded forward, so that the face is obscured and the undecorated flat reverse is visible. The suspension loops at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock axis remain. The other two are missing. Some lettering around the edge reads + SIGNVM [ ] and is largely lillegible thereafter due to wear. The design on the front is unclear and obscured by the creases caused by the fold. However, some lines visible towards the edge of the object suggest this is a badge commemorating St John the Baptist, as per figure 237 (page 220) of Spencer's refere…

A circular cast lead weight with a crowned H and 26 stamped into its upper surface in three locations. There is a central perforation with iron residue inside suggesting that it may have been a suspended weight. The letters H and the numbers 26 could possible relate to the reigns of either Henry IV (1399 - 1461) or Henry VIII (1509 - 1547). However, the style of the numbers is much more consistent with a later Post-Medieval date than a Medieval one. Its weights of 460g converts as 16.22 ounces. The 16ounce pound as a commerce weight in the wool trade was commonly used in the 14t…

A uniface lead token with bevelled edges. The diameter is 16mm and the object is 2mm thick. The face of the token features, in relief, is a flat topped shield with a cross (St George cross?) and central raised pellet surrounded by a border of small pellets. The design is stamped slightly off the flan. This is a probably Post-Medieval token, although its construction suggests an alternative possible use as a gaming counter.
