Part of a cast copper alloy chafing dish drop handle and handle attachment lug, dating from about AD 1400-1600. The handle is incomplete, the bar is hexagonal in cross-section a straight section passing through the attachment lug which then angle at 90°'s into a concave curve with worn breaks at each. A sub-oval shaped attachment lug, sub-rectangular in cross section with a circular perforation is attached to the straight bar of the handle. An incomplete leg from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel, a posnet or skillet of late medieval or post-medieval date (AD 1450-1750). Only the toe of the leg remains with a plano-convex cross-section and four moulded convex toes at the foot. The reverse is concave. Mesurements: 24.63mm in length; width: 26.67mm; thickness; 15.26mm and weight: 43.3g.  Datasheet 41 (Butler, Green, and Payne 2009) places this type of leg as type B or C and notes 'The former dating from the late 15th and early 16th century and the latter was already in used in the 16th century, then g

A Post Medieval cooking vessel leg: The foot is a 'hoof' type. In plan it is a sub-rectangle, with a rounded lower edge and broken upper edge. The break is not too recent. In profile the reverse of the leg is straight and in section it is sub semi-circular. The lower portion of the front face is rounded, decorated with five, slightly radiating, wide vertical ribs, above which is a transverse collar in the form of a ridge. The surface is abraded and has a mottled mid green coloured patina. The leg measures 30.70mm tall, 23.47mm wide across the leg and 13.35mm thick. It weig…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy handle from a skillet or posnet of early post-medieval date (c. 1500-1650). Description: The fragment tapers in width and thickness along its length and is sub rectangular in plan, and D shaped in cross section with a flat top and a convex back. Measurements 31.06 mm in length, 23.41 mm in width and 7.08 in thickness. It weighs 25.5 grams. Discussion: Handles of this style are typically found on posnets and skillets. A posnet is a small cauldron with handle and a skillet is a saucepan with three legs. As it is relatively straight and no…

A copper alloy medieval to post-medieval (AD c.1400-c.1700) chafing dish handle terminal. This handle lug is in the shape of a human hand clasped to make a loose fist, the fingers and thumb of which are clearly shown via grooves. Through the centre of the fist there is an open hole (c.6.20 mm across), which presumably held the drop handle of the chafing dish. Above the wrist the lug abruptly narrows and from its centre projects a square-sectioned rod. This rod has diagonal transverse grooves along each face, possibly an early form of screw thread. Overall, the terminal measu…

A 17th Century. Copper alloy, cast, broken skillet handle Rounded, slightly tapering, rectangular handle, flat front surface with slightly convex lower surface and flat 'D' shape cross-section. On the upper side of the handle between two beaded borders is an inscription cast in high relief in Capital letters '[IOHN]. HATCH.' which reads horizontally along the handle. From other surviving examples stops likely to be illustrative. During and prior to the 17th Century the letter 'J' did not exist and 'I' was used so this represents the fore-name 'JOHN' of the owner. The handle is in…

Fragment of a Medieval, AD.14th-16th century, copper alloy cauldron, representing one of the supporting feet, AD.1300-1500. The foot is shaped into the form of an armoured lower leg with greave and sabaton depicted. The object comprises only the foot and lower part of the shin with an old worn break mid leg. The object has a dark green patina all over. Its design is reminiscent of effigy brasses and sculpture. The find is very similar to No.459 in Egan 1998, that example was retrieved from a 15th century context dated AD.1400-1450, and is thought to be from a tripod ewer. Length: 3…

A cast copper alloy chafing dish handle. The handle has a trapezoid frame in plan, with rounded corners and the three concave sides; the fourth, straight side is the shortest side with the attachment lug. It is square in cross section. The attachment fitting to the chafing dish is still in place. This is a thick, flat lug, oval in plan with a square projection to one side from which projects the short, broad, circular rivet that went through the side of the vessel. It measures 23.97 mm long including the the attachment loop, 22.98 mm wide and 4.21 mm thick. The attachment lug is 22.47…

An incomplete copper-alloy drop handle from a vessel of later medieval date. Part of one side/arm of the handle survives intact, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. It is rectangular in cross-section, with a slightly faceted front and reverse faces, preserving a large portion of the handle and part of one side arm. Where the outer edge of the handle and side arm meet there is a projecting acorn shaped knop. The centre of the handle has moulded decoration comprising an oval bead flanked by single tranverse ribs. A zoomorphic copper-alloy spout probably from a ewer of later medieval or early post-medieval date. The spout is tubular with a moulded dog's head terminal including integral ovate ears, a raised brow beneath which are slight indentations, though no distinct eyes are present, and a rounded snout. A raised ridge is present running along the top of the dogs head. The mouth is open with a circular spout protruding from it. From the reverse of the head a narrowed neck extends widening sharply to an extended open terminal at which point the spout would have been soldered to the vessel prop…

Cast copper alloy pot leg and foot. The leg is round in section with a slight angle at the front. It narrows and thins slightly from the attachment end to the foot. At the attachment end appears to be a small part of the vessel top which has a rough interior surface. The foot projects out at 90 degrees and has a slightly concave base and rounded toe. The leg would have projected up at about 80 degrees to vertical. It is 46.09 mm tall, 18.31 mm wide and 13.09 mm thick; it weighs 44.03 grams. The size and fine shaping suggests this may have come from a serving vessel or one used for ser…

An icomplete cast copper alloy vessel of Medieval date, AD.1100-1400. The vessel is shaped like an ampulla, with a bulbous rounded body that tapers in width to a narrow neck. Two semi-circular loops would have formed handles, just two stubbs remain one at either side of the opening. Unlike the typical pilgrim souvenirs, it is not made of lead alloy. The vessel has a deep greenish-gray patina with some suface pitting. The neck of the vessel is broken. Traditional interpretations of these vessels are as a flask for holy oil. It is possible that it is from a travelling chrismatory, or se…

A Medieval or Post Medieval cast lead alloy container, probably a birdfeeder, circa 1400-1700. The feeder is semi-circular in shape with a flat base. There are two cast decoration bands running around the curved side of the container, one on the rim and the other 11.63 mm below the rim. The container has been partly squashed. The object would have held water, green plants or seed for a caged bird. There is no sign of a means of attachment. Egan, Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition(2005) p129, states that the plainer examples continue into the late 17th century. It has a…

Cast copper alloy drop- or loop-handle from a chafing dish dating from the late medieval or post-medieval period, (1400-1600 AD). Both handle and attachment loop survive. The handle is shaped like an inverted openwork letter T with filed chamfered edges. The handle has a shouldered attachment loop, rectangular sectioned with collared integral rivet. The perforation holding the handle is off-centre and has probably been mis-cast or mis-drilled. Both the handle and the attachment show signs of filing. A Medieval to post-Medieval cast copper-alloy cooking vessel foot (c. 1250-c. 1650). At the front, this foot has a vertical central mid-rib and has a transverse break at the top. The base of the foot is rounded and worn. The object is corroded and has patches of consolidated soot. The break is abraded. This leg was probably originally part of a cauldron. Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the 13th century and to have continued at least until c. 1600 (Geake 2001: 52). Geake, H. 2001. Finds Recording Guide.
