Medieval cast lead alloy pointed oval seal matrix, 13th century. Central device a very simple lis. The well-executed inscription reads * S' AGNETIS IVAL. The second and third letters of AGNETIS are difficult to read and the first letter of the surname appears damaged. It seems possible that this seal matrix should be read as * S' AGNETIS WAL (Seal of Agnes Wall). Moulded decoration on the reverse of a raised spine with curvilinear decoration to either side, and a poorly moulded unfinished loop at one end (corresponding with the start of the inscription). Lead looped Palstave (Narrow-Bodied, Side-flanged Type Class 2 Group 1) with a narrow blade and trident decoration. It has a narrow body, straight sides and flat side flanges which extend from the butt to the blade edge. A matte white skin of corrosion covers the lead surface except on one side where five scratches reveal it as grey and shiny. Generally the palstave appears unused with most angles and edges intact. A Roman to Post-Medieval large, pyramid-shaped lead weight, probably a spindle whorl. Length: 50.3mm, width at widest end: 38.4mm, width and narrow end: 11.8mm, weight: 301.9g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184).
