Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast silver-gilt spoon knob. It is of the 'maidenhead' type, comprising the head and shoulders of a lady with long hair. She rises from a calyx of leaves. Long hair depicts virginity, hence the term 'maidenhead' spoon. Traces of gilding appear on many parts of the spoon handle. It is in good condition and broke from the body of the spoon cleanly at the join, leaving a stepped edge. It is late 16th to early 17th century in date. See 2005 T63, a comparable 'Maidenhead' spoon handle also from North Devon
