Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Kirklees
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the Neolithic period. The arrowhead has some very fine working along the upper left edge of the dorsal (upper) face. At the butt there is a small patch of cortex and a tiny surface area of working where the flint has been prepared before being struck from the nodule. The ventral face is smooth with a bulb of percussion. The arrowhead shows evidence of heat alteration in the form of tiny cracks on the surface and has patination on some parts of the surface (this is the milky coloured surface layer caused by the chemical reaction between the flint and the…

County: Kirklees
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the early Neolithic period (3500-2100 BC). The arrowhead has been finely worked on both faces into a perfect leaf shape, although it has been chipped on one edge. The arrowhead is knapped from mid-grey flint. It weighs 1.19g and measures 26.97mm in length, 17.8mm in width and 2.6mm in thickness. The retouch is very fine and covers the entire surface rather than just the edges of the tool.

Unfinished flint arrowhead. The small arrowhead is triangular in shape. About three quarters of the way down the two edges of the arrowhead there is a notch suggesting that the arrowhead was unfinished and this bit would have been knapped away. The tool weighs 0.78g and measures 22.6mm in length, 13.4mm in width and 3.55mm in thickness.

Flint arrowhead blank. The triangular piece of flint measures 28.9mm in length, 16.9mm in width and has a thickness of 5.2mm (the piece is roughly this thick throughout). There has been a small amount of working along the bottom edge of the piece indicating ‘platform preparation’ where the flint is finely worked along this edge before it is struck from the core. The piece weighs 2.49g.

Flint arrowhead blank. The triangular piece of flint measures 35.2mm in length, 17.41mm in width and has a thickness of 4.3mm (the piece is roughly this thick throughout). There has been a small amount of working along the bottom edge of the piece indicating that it was probably going to be knapped into a barbed and tanged arrowhead. There is also evidence of working known as ‘platform preparation’ where the flint is finely worked along this same edge before it is struck from the core. The piece weighs 2.83g and measures 35.2mm in length and 17.4mm in width.

Possible flint arrowhead. The arrowhead may be unfinished or is simply a more crude example. It is triangular in shape with both the long edges displaying fine reworking (but this does not extend across the whole of the dorsal surface). The ventral surface has no reworking which is unusual for an arrowhead and the bulb of percussion is located at the tip of the arrowhead on this side. The arrowhead measures 28.3mm in length, 21.6mm in width, 4.4mm in thickness and weighs 2.73g.

Possible flint arrowhead. The arrowhead may be unfinished or is simply a more crude example. It is triangular in shape with both the long edges displaying reworking (but this does not extend across the whole of the dorsal surface). The ventral surface also has some very fine reworking on the left ventral edge and some larger working on the right edge. The arrowhead measures 40.38mm in length, 26.8mm in width, 6.13mm in thickness and weighs 5.1g.

Flint arrowhead. The arrowhead has some fine working around the tip but is not very well worked at the butt. The arrowhead has been knapped from a flake with a pronounced bulb of percussion on the ventral (lower) face. It is unusual because the bulb scar is on the left edge of the arrowhead on the ventral face as opposed to the bottom of the arrow. The tool weighs 2.54g and measures 34.12mm in length, 18.98mm in width and 5.04mm in thickness.
