Unusual copper alloy strap fitting, probably related to horse harness wear. The fitting has a circular frame with a large rectangular loop attached to this and hanging below. The circular frame has two raised decorative knuckle shaped elements – one on each side so that they are opposite each other, and divide the frame into two. Each of these appears to have once (possibly) held enamel decoration. The ring-shaped frame on one side is of semi-circular section and has two small circular indentations (that may have contained decorative enamel); one below each ‘knuckle’ shape, w…

Copper alloy miniature cauldron, cast in a triplicate form. Copper alloy cauldron toys have been dated to the late16th-17th century and are regularly found inas a single component. This find has been cast so that three cauldrons are positioned together each with a single handle lug. Each cauldron would also have had a single leg although only one such leg survives. The reason for creating a triplicate example is unclear; vessels known as ‘fuddling’ vessels have been recorded as full size ceramics and were produced from the 17th century in the ‘country pottery’ traditio…

Copper alloy zoomorphic mount, probably Roman in date. The mount is shaped like a bird of prey, possibly an eagle. The feet of the bird are fixed at either side of what looks like a cylindrical pin head. The 'pin head' is very short (12mm), tapering sharply to a point and rather than being used as a pin, the object was probably fixed into another object, possibly a wooden object (hence the sharpened point). The birds neck is outstretched upwards with the beck pointing up. The wings (one of which is broken away) are positioned slightly away from the body and curve downwards, as does th…

Copper alloy strap end (or buckle) dating to the Medieval period (1250-1400AD). The strap end has what looks like a D shaped buckle frame with an extended lip. There is a single perforation or rivet hole at the frame end of the plate – it is unclear whether this has filled in due to corrosion or whether it actually holds a rivet. The plate end of the object widens out into a triangular shape and has a split end like a strap-end although no further rivets are visible. Copper alloy medieval figurine. The figurine is hollowed on the back and has gilding remaining on the front. The figure is full length and is wearing long drapery and the arms appear to be crossed over the chest so that the hands are near to the shoulders. The face is worn away but the figure looks to have a halo around the head. The figure represents a saint or apostle and was probably produced in Limoges where many such examples were made. These enamelled figures commonly have two rivet holes and would have been mounted onto a reliquary, box or cross. This example has a circula…

Copper alloy mount, probably post medieval in date. The mount has a central raised dome (with a hollow back) with four arms radiating in a cross. Only one of these arms appears to be complete and has an elaborate terminal with a separate circular copper alloy rivet. The decoration on the arms of the cross looks like it could be zoomorphic although this is not clear and it could just be abstract or floral. The edges of each arm are quite jagged and the object may have been tinned/silvered. It is likely to be a furniture fitting or decorative mount. The object weighs 7.47g and meas…
