An incomplete / broken cast copper alloy 'S'-shaped belt hook or strap fitting of Post-Medieval, most probably 18th century date (AD 1550 - AD 1900). The extant terminal is in the form of a snake / serpant or possibly a swan's head which is turned to form an open hook. The central part of the fitting has cast moulded decoration. This decoration is in the form of a central bulbous faceted ring which is flanked by acanthus like leaves. The body of the hook does not seem to be decorated and the hooked end has simple cast zoomorphic features. The fitting is a mid - green colour with an ab…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting or belt mount / stud or mount of probable post medieval date (1600-1800). The plate is heavily eroded and corroded and therefore partially illegible. It comprises a square shaped plate with bevelled edges. The front face is deeply incised with a set of initials - cypher - J M - in copper plate style writing with many curlicues and embellishments. The style of decoration is best paralleled with 18th century book and harness mounts. The reverse face is flat - with four rectangular studs projecting from each corner - all are worn and abraded. The mount is …

A broken and incomplete folded and cut sheet metal strap fitting / belt mount from a medieval buckle (AD 1250-1450). Only the upper plate is present and it is broken into two conjoining parts along a recent break. The plate is rectangular in plan being formed from a single sheet - a single rectangular tab has been cut at the mid-point on the folded edge. The plate would have been wrapped around the strap bar of the now lost D shaped buckle; the U shaped removal / tab would have allowed for a separate buckle pin to be fitted. Two pierced rivet holes are present on the folded end - one …

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is a pointed oval shape in plan and a slightly domed rectangle in profile; the edges are bevelled. The long edges are scalloped and in form it seems to be a very debased and highly stylised fleur-de-lis. The reverse face of the fitting is broadly flat and undecorated. Two cast sub-rectangular projections (hooks) extend from either end of the fitting; both of these are splayed and the tips broken; they have sub-rectangular shaped cross sections. These hooks would have passed thro…

The plate comprises four conjoined pierced circular elements - in plan it is broadly square shape whilst in section it is irregular. At the centre of the plate is a recessed panel with a central projecting conical shaped boss. Each of the four suspension holes has probably been cast - the lower two are heavily worn and the external frame of one is cracked. The upper two holes are unworn. Cast copper alloy mount of probable late medieval or post medieval date (1400-1600). The mount is sub-oval in plan and domed in cross section (D-shaped). The front face is convex and undecorated. The reverse is concave. From a central position a small square sectioned spike projects; this terminates in a broken blunted break. The mount is a dark mid green colour with a patchy surface patina. The length of the spike would suggest that this mount was used either in a piece of furniture or through a relatively thick piece of leather, possibly on horse harness. The mount measures 22.…

An incomplete fragment from a Post-Medieval copper-alloy sword-belt eye-section toggle fitting (c. 1500-c. 1700). The fitting only survives as the integral open and worn circular loop of the wider end of a larger composite device. This loop has a sub-rectangular cross-shaped aperture with rounded ends forming an eye. Attached to the loop is a smaller sub-circular off-set loop with a circular rivet hole. Set in a similar position are te remains of an integrally cast strap plate which is decorated with a floral pattern and inlaid with a black coloured surface. The reverse is plain and u…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is an eroded hexagonal shape in plan and rectangular in section. The upper face is decorated with an applied white metal - possibly tin or silvering - surface. The exterior edge is scalloped but eroded - originally probably being flower - rose like. Integrally cast pellets are present on the surface of each petal and it is possible that a stamped design had once been applied. Due to the condition of the surface this is now lost. Cast copper alloy strap fitting / belt mount of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is irregular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section; the edges are slightly faceted. In form the fitting is best described as being heart shaped (sub-triangular) with the tapering point expanding with a double loop and terminating in a pointed knop. In form the underside is very like an inverted fleur-de-lis. The exterior surfaces may well have had an applied tinned surface. There is no other incised or applied decoration present. The central part of the fitting has punched decoration comprising C shaped stamps which overlap applied by hand rather than machine. This is applied to both faces and represent scales.
