Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete copper-alloy steelyard weight of Roman date.
Three fragments of the weight survive, probably representing around three quarters of the original artefact. The well-made object takes the form of a three-dimensional representation of a male bust emerging from a calyx. The male has a bald head and realistically portrayed facial features: the ears are small and moulded in low relief; the eyes are set within deep sockets; the nose is of flattened appearance; the unsmiling mouth consists of a short groove and is bordered by a full beard with large, drooping moustache. The bust e…

Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy shield-shaped mount of Medieval date.
The mount takes the form of a heater shield. The design is very worn and is subsequently difficult to ascertain; however, it is probably 'Gules (three) lions passant guardant in pale Argent' . Little of the red and white enamel remains and the third (bottom) lion is very unclear. Projecting downwards from the bottom point of the shield is a right-angled arm terminating in a perforated circular lug. Two similar arms would originally have projected from the upper points also, but both are now missing.
The object measures 47.5…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy open-frame brooch, dating from the late medieval period.
The brooch comprises a flat-sectioned ring with damaged constriction for the now-missing pin. The upper surface bears a stamped and incised legend which is poorly executed in Black Letter. A cross pattée, located to the right of the pin constriction, marks the start of the legend, which reads 'ihc nAzA- ren rex' ('Jesus of Nazareth'), with the 's' retrograde and the 'a' unusually large. The final character after the retrograde 's' is probably merely decorative (star?)…

Object type: LINCH PIN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete copper-alloy terminal from a late Iron Age to early Roman linch pin. The face of the object is circular, measures 22.1mm in diameter and has a large recessed cell, with an internal circular rim and two small circular holes (one above the other) at the centre. Each of these two central holes sits at the centre of a slightly larger, smooth area, which probably indicates the position of a pair of enamel inserts, no trace of which survive. The remainder of the recessed area has a mottled appearance and probably contained red enamel infill. On the reverse, a tapering shank of …

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy blade of probable middle Bronze Age date. The general form and dimensions of this piece suggest that it came from a long, slender implement, such as a dirk or rapier; the narrowness and thinness would seem to preclude the possibility of it being from a sword. The piece has roughly parallel sides and is of thin lozenge-shaped section, with bevelled edges. The top and bottom edges are almost horizontal, but the jagged nature of these edges suggest that this piece was broken (albeit possibly deliberately) rather than cut. The surfaces have a dark blueish-green…

The ring is of D-shaped section, its flat outer surface inscribed with the following script: 'Robert Erle Carmarvin'. The shield has been applied at the point where the two ends of the ring have been joined together. The longest axis of the shield is aligned to the ring and its legend - i.e. the shield is on its side. Incised into the surface of this shield is the image of a bird of prey standing on a gloved hand, facing left, its wings spread. A crown with three fleurs i…

Object type: BOOK FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly corroded copper-alloy hollow book clasp of medieval date. It is hollow throughout and has probably been cast as two pieces - the main section and the flat backplate - which have then been soldered together. The attachment end comprises a thin rectangular 'box', into which the strap fixed to one cover of the book would have originally slotted. The end of the box is open, with a single central circular rivet hole in both upper and lower plates, and the upper vertical edge is decoratively scalloped. The upper surface of this rectangular box has an incised decorative pan…

A copper-alloy ring of possible late Iron Age to early Roman date. Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete copper-alloy artefact, probably representing part of a Late Iron Age harness fitting.
The piece consists of a 'D-sectioned' ring with two settings and the remains of two bifurcating projections. The now-empty settings, located opposite one another, take the form of circular collets (one damaged). A circular-sectioned perforation extends through each setting, emerging on the flat underside of the object. A low, curved moulding surrounds the base of each collet. The bifurcating projections are also opposite one another, each located halfway between the two settings. In bot…

A cast copper-alloy pilgrim badge of late medieval date. The badge is of openwork form and the decorative content is relief moulded. The central column comprises a male figure standing, his body angled slightly to the right, his legs together and his hands are held behind his back. He appears to be naked, although this is uncertain due to the level of surface wear. Extending from above the head is the trunk of a tree with an arc of branches and leaves at the top. On each side of the central figure is an archer, his bow drawn and his arrow pointing at the captive. The archers wear baggy…
