A distorted copper-alloy finger ring, probably dating from the post-Medieval to modern period. The hoop has stright, parallelsides, a flat inner face and slightly convex outer surface. Decoration to this outer surface consists of a single line of punched pellets, located centrally and extending parallel to the sides of the hoop. At one end of this line, four projecting prongs create a possible claw setting or the remains of a buckle-shaped bezel. Length: 26mm; width: 12.5mm; band height:4.3mm.Weight: 1.51g

Length of silver wire, circular in section, tapering at one end, blunt at the other. The wire has been bent into an overlapping ring. Date: uncertain, but probably more than 300 years old. Discussion: although the object has a superficial resemblance to Roman snake rings, there are too few diagnostic features to be certain of this. External d.: 19.2mm Internal d.: 13mm Wt.: 2.43g Note: this item is more than 300 years old and composed of more than 10% precious metal so qualifies as treasure as stipulated in the Treasure Act 1996. Roman gold finger-ring, much bent and distorted but intact. The hoop consists of a flat strip of sheet-metal, faceted, that widens to triangular shoulders and a flat bezel. The bezel is set with a circular box setting with smaller 'satellite' settings on each corner, only one of which is undamaged. These were presumably originally set, but all the settings are now missing. The main circular setting has been shown by scientific analysis to have had a silver-alloy setting, now much degraded. Date: c. third century AD Wt.: 2.65g Discussion: a not dissimilar ring was discovered a…

Roman silver finger ring of 'keeled' type. The ring has a square-section hoop that expands sharply to triangular shoulders with raised mouldings and grooves just inside their outer edges. The flat bezel is circular, and is missing its decorative applique. There are further grooves on the side of the bezel, and some damage to one side; perhaps this is deliberate and caused by the removal of the applique. A fragment of a Medieval silver finger-ring. The fragment is D-shaped in section and is tapered at one end to 3.5 mm in width. This flares at the other end to 5 mm, presumably which would have formed the shoulders of a bezel or central design. The outer surface is engraved with a rope-work design formed of angled incisions. Twisted rope-work designs can be seen on other finger-rings such as a signet ring HAMP-CBA236. The fragment dates probably to the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. Dimensions: length 21.3 mm; width of hoop 4.9 mm; depth of hoop 2 mm.

A Medieval silver-gilt finger-ring with a broken and flattened hoop. The bezel is in the form of a heart flanked by two quatrefoil flowers which are topped by a crown with five broken crenellations. Opposite the bezel the hoop is engraved on the outer surface with a rectangular quatrefoil flower. The crowned heart motif is common to Medieval rings of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and many examples can be found. See for example SOM-F8C1ED found in Somerset and dated from circa 1400-1550, and SOM-A4FA0A also from Somerset and attributed to the same date range, and DENO-871506…

A near-complete gold finger ring of medieval date. The finger ring has a plain D-sectioned hoop and has a raised box bezel at the top with bezelled edges to take a stone or glass insert. The insert is now missing and part of the bezel is damaged. This type of finger ring was current throughout the 13th and 14th centuries AD. A similar example can be found in the 2007 Treasure Annual Report no 234.

A complete gold post-medieval 'posy ring' (or poem ring), made from a thin plain hoop inscribed on the inner band in lower case with the phrase 'in Christ and thee my comfort be'. There is also stamped maker's mark bearing the initials 'RD' in black letter script but the mark cannot be identified, however the lettering is consistent with a date in the late 17th Century or early years of the 18th Century AD.

An undated copper-alloy ring. The object is oval in both plan and cross section, the band gradually widening from one side to the other. The dark green patination is consistent with a prehistoric to Roman date. It is, however, uncertain as to whether this is a finger ring or whether it served a different purpose, such as a harness fitting. Width: 30.2mm; length/depth: 24.3mm; maximum height of band: 4.6mm. Weight: 4.83g.

Part of a Roman copper-alloy finger ring. The distorted piece represents the shoulders and bezel of the ring, with the hoop having been lost in antiquity. An oval setting occupies the outer surface of the bezel, containing traces of a white enamel inset. The shoulders are of D-shaped cross section, tapering to the points of the breaks. An unidentified substance and traces of gilding adhere to the underside of the ring; the presence of this material and the splaying of the ring both suggest a deliberate adaptation, the purpose of which is unclear. Width: 28.4mm; width of bezel (t…

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman finger ring, dating from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The bezel is occupied by an oval setting containing, at its centre point, what appears to be the remains of a circular mother-of-pearl inset. Traces of a red glass surround this centre, creating the impression of an eye. The shoulders taper smoothly into what remains of the hoop, which is of D-shaped cross section. Surviving width: 16.1mm; width of bezel (transverse): 9.2mm; length/depth of ring: 6.4mm. Weight: 1.58g.

A post-medieval copper-alloy finger ring. The hoop is of oval cross section, with a slight narrowing at the back. The hoop continues across the back of the bezel, the latter of which comprises a circular setting with grooved rim and a faceted inset of clear glass or rock crystal. Width: 14.3mm; length/depth: 16.6mm. Weight: 1.34g. The date of this ring is based on the presence of the faceted inset, which is a common feature of finger rings from the 17th century onwards. A similar ring, albeit in gold, is Treasure case 2014 T574 (SWYOR-DB246B), which was dated to the mid-17th …

A Roman copper-alloy finger ring, made from a wide-cuff bracelet. The bracelet employed is of flat section with parallel sides. On the outer surface a shallow groove is flanked by two parallel ropework ridges, each ridge bordered by a pair of grooves narrower than that at the centre. The two ends of the piece, which overlap slightly, are irregular, suggesting that the bracelet was broken by snapping rather than cutting. Maximum diameter: 13.7mm; height: 13.5mm. Weight: 4.34g. A late medieval lead-alloy finger-ring. The hoop and bezel have been made as two separate pieces and then soldered together. The slightly damaged bezel takes the form of a disc, the central area of which is occupied by a crudely executed Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) design, in negative relief, surrounded by a circumferential groove. The animal stands to the right, faces back towards its tail and has cross-hatched detail on its body. The shaft of the Latin cross is located behind the animal, halfway along its length, and its arms have flaring terminals. An irregular patch of lead-alloy s…
