A fragment of Roman floor tile with a finger-mark impression. Length: 137.5mm; width: 116.5mm; thickness: 40.0mm; weight: 812g. A surface find, it was found in association with Roman ceramic building material consisting of unclassified (Roman) tile, box-flue tile, tegulae and tesserae. The floor tile was discovered where the grassland had been disturbed during the very wet conditions at the 2008 Isle of Wight ‘Bestival’ musical event. The find-spot is very close to the site of Combley Roman Villa. Another 12 fragments found 29/01/2009.

These tesserae were discovered where the grassland had been disturbed during the very wet conditions at the 2008 Isle of Wight ‘Bestival’ musical event. A fragment of a Roman tile with a maker's mark: 'R'. Length: 198.0mm; width: 145mm; thickness: 33.0mm; weight: 1468g. This fragment is probably from a lydion or pedalis tile although due to its thickness it is more likely to be part of a lydion. The mark has been made using the finger. An incomplete post-Medieval clay tobacco pipe (c. 1730-c. 1780). This undecorated pipe consists of a bowl and spur and part of the stem. The bowl projects forwards at an angle of about 45° and has a break at the rim. The spur is plain and has no maker's initial marks. Its stem is circular in cross-section. A fragment of a Roman ceramic coarse ware cooking vessel (c. AD 43-100). The surviving c. 7% of the beaded rim has a small angled shoulder below. It is estimated that when complete, the outer diameter of the rim would have been about 145.0mm. The outer face is dark grey and the inner face is coarser and lighter. It is tempered with rounded quartz and occasional pieces of flint. Height: 54.0mm; width: 68.0mm; maximum thickness of body: 7.7mm. Weight: 38.87g.

A rim fragment of a Roman ceramic Black Burnished ware vessel, possibly a 'dog-dish' or shallow bowl (c. AD 200-410). The rim is plain and rounded. Inclusions include abundant sub-rounded translucent quartz and very small flecks of mica. When complete the vessel would have had a diameter of about 260.0mm. There is now no indication of any burnishing or decoration. The surfaces are dark grey and the core is also dark grey. Darker patches are the remains of marine growth. A rim sherd of a Roman ceramic cooking pot. This sherd appears to be Vectis Ware but seems to include grog in the tempering which is not usual. The upper face of the everted rim has three parallel transverse inscribed grooves. The sherd was extracted from the cliff face just beneath the topsoil. A fragment of Roman ceramic tile (AD 43-410). This fragment is now sub-square in plan and rectangular in cross-section. A small portion of the edge seems to have a finished surface. The upper surface is greyish red, flat and very worn and the underside is red, coarse and uneven. The core is largely grey. The breaks are old but the break shown in cross-section is more recent. The outer surface is dark grey and the core is pale red. Burnishing has not survived and the breaks are abraded. Height: 45.6mm; width: 63.4mm; overall thickness: 20.0mm; maximum thickness of body: 7.3mm. Weight: 32.97g. Outer diameter of rim when complete: c. 160.0mm. A Medieval coarse-ware rim sherd (c. 1200-c. 1400). The sherd is an everted rim with an external bevel. The bevel is angled downwards and outwards from the top of the rim. It has orange surfaces with a grey core and is tempered with rounded quartz, small pieces of angular flint and pieces of white material which might be chalk. A fragment from the side of a Roman probable East Gaulish industry Samian flanged bowl, similar to Dragendorff form 38 (c. AD 150-250 (Webster 1996: 51).
