An almost complete Neolithic stone adze (4000 BC-2351 BC).
This adze is sub-triangular in plan and an elongated 'D'-shape in side view. The front (dorsal) face is convex and the rear (ventral) face is flat. From the butt, the sides flare evenly to the curved cutting edge. The lower part of the ventral faces curves inwards towards the cutting edge. The dorsal face is regularly pitted and the ventral face is very smooth.
The surface is green with a reddish hue but with a darker area close to the butt on the ventral face. Slight damage on the dorsal face has revealed that the colou…

An incomplete late Mesolithic or Neolithic stone implement, possibly an axe, adze or mace (c. 7000 BC-c. 2350 BC).
This object may have been oval and symmetrical in shape when complete. In plan, the fiished end is evenly rounded and the sides flare to a break either side of the hourglass perforation. A break has occurred mid-way across the perforation. In cross-section the perforation seems to have had a diameter of about 17.5mm. One face is slightly more convex that the other face and each face have striations.
The implement is made of an unidentified igneous rock. It is dark g…

Workflow stage: Published
An apparently complete Neolithic to Iron Age stone saddle quern (4000 BC-AD 42)
This quern is made of limestone and is probably local Bembridge Limestone or Quarr Stone. It is sub-square in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section.
The underside is uneven and worn in places and the centre of the upper face is dished forming a grinding surface. The edges of the upper face have been deliberately smoothed or worn. One end is partially flat and smooth and may have been deliberately formed as such. A muller (rubber) would have been used on the working surface to grind grain.

A fragment of a shale torus of possible Roman date and unknown function (AD 43-410).
The fragment is curved in plan and sub-oval in cross-section with breaks on one face and both ends. It was probably annular in form and it can be estimated from rim chart calculations that it would have had an internal diameter of c. 60.0mm and an external diameter of c. 100mm. Excluding the breaks, the object has a smooth surface and lamination is occurring in places.
This object is broadly similar to incomplete tori from the Isle of Wight (Tomalin 1987: 47-48, refs: C 12; C 13) and assumed to be …
