This implement, made on an elongated pebble, is sub-triangular in plan and sub-circular in cross-section. About 60% of the cortex is retained and has multi-directional flake removals. The cortex at the front (first image) is pitted and battered indicating that it was also used as a hammerstone. The butt is slightly oblique and has several small removals. The point has cortex on one side and has been flaked on the opposite side. The back has a large natural fracture and is mainl…

Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead (4000 BC-2351 BC).
About 60% of the implement survives. The cutting edge is missing due to an old transverse break.
In plan the butt is rounded and the sides flare to the break where it is pointed-oval in cross-section. In side view it is sub-rectangular but pointed at the butt end. Although the axehead has been polished, much of the flaking can be seen. A large flake scar near the break may have been created when it was broken.
This axehead is orange and mid-brown in places with some small off-white areas.

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead (c. 2500 BC- c. 1500 BC).
This arrowhead has been made on a tertiary flake. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross-section. The arrowhead has been knapped using both direct and indirect percussion techniques. Both faces have received about the same amount of knapping. The tang has a square end and is a sub-square in plan, roughly pointed-oval in cross-section. Each barb now has a square end but they seem to have been truncated. The ends of the barbs are now flat and smooth.

This axehead is now sub-triangular in plan and is pointed oval in cross-section. Although the grinding has been sufficiently deep to remove the majority of the flaking scars, some do remain close to the butt on one face. A small area of battering at the butt end may indicate that the axehead had also been used as a hammer. There is also a small area of battering at the top of one of the flake scars close to the polished area. The axehead was probably polished overall as a flattened bevelled edge extends the ful…
