It has a separate iron spindle that is enclosed by a copper-alloy tube with integral double-spiked tongues. It was used to weigh against the 4 escudos, a Portuguese coin otherwise known as the Johannes or "Joe" in England. The value was equal to that of thirty six shillings, with a weight of 14.32g.
