An incomplete Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic flint pick (c. 6500 BC-c. 2100 BC).
This is about 50% of the implement and is the butt end.
It is sub-triangular in plan and cross-section and has been knapped overall except for a small area of cortex. There are several natural cavities on one face.
The surfaces, including the break, are dark grey with off-white mottling.
Length: 92.02mm; width: 50.32mm; thickness: 39.57mm. Weight: 175.87.
Although the implement was found within the inter-tidal zone, the arrises are sharp and there is no marine growth.

A complete Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic flint pick.
This implement is pointed oval in plan and side view. It is roughly 'D'-shaped in cross-section close to the butt and cutting edge but at the centre it is pentagonal in cross-section. One face is predominately covered with cortex and the remaining surfaces are flaked overall. It has a pointed butt and the cutting edge has four long lateral flake scars at the front. The cortex has numerous percussion marks and appears to have been used as a hammerstone. This implement is particularly wide and thick in relation to its length. It…

A complete Late Mesolithic to early Neolithic pick (c. 6500 BC c. 2900 BC).The pick, made from an elongated flint nodule, is largely trapezoidal in cross-section. However the butt end is semi-circular in cross-section. It has been crudely flaked and is 'waisted' at the centre. In side view it is 'hog-backed'. In plan, the cutting edge is slightly pointed (almost semi-circular) and its side view is 'V'-shaped. The upper face of the butt end is battered and has been used as a hammer.
The flint is mainly buff/beige and has some slightly darker areas.

A complete pick of Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic date (c. 6500 BC-c. 2900 BC). The implement is made of chert and has been knapped overall to form a sub-rectangular shape in plan. It is sub-triangular in cross-section, blunt at the butt end and the cutting edge is in the form of a three faced point. This implement is probably a local product as chert occurs naturally in the Isle of Wight. 178.4 x 64.1 x 42.3mm. Weight: c. 466g. Donated by the finder to the Isle of Wight Heritage Service.

A complete flint pick of Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic date (6500 BC-2900 BC).
The pick is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross-section. It has been made from an elongated flint pebble and some small areas of a grey cortex survive on the dorsal face and the butt end. It has been knapped overall on the ventral face and also along both sides. The cutting edge is pointed and the butt end is rounded and blunt.
This implement, similar to others found in the Isle of Wight inter-tidal zone, is coloured dark grey, grey, orange and buff. It was found as a surface find …

This pick has been knapped overall except for a small area at one side of the butt where a creamy coloured cortex is present. It is characteristically hump-backed and is an elongated sub-oval shape in plan. In plan, the sides are roughly parallel and then taper near the bottom towards the cutting edge which has been achieved by very large flake removals on two of the opposite faces. In side view, the pick is widest at the butt end …

A complete flint pick of Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date (6500 BC – 2900 BC). Length: 106.4mm; width: 52.2mm and 40.8 thick. Weight: 215.09g.
This pick has been knapped overall. It is characteristically ‘hump-backed’ and is an elongated sub-oval shape in plan. In plan, the sides flare outwards slightly towards the cutting edge which has been achieved by crude radial flaking on the dorsal face. The rear face of the cutting edge does not have a transverse flake removal. In side view, the pick is widest at about 2/3 of the way down from the butt. At this point, on the dor…

This pick, like other similar implements found in the Isle of Wight, is characteristically hump-backed. In plan, from the centre, the width generally narrows towards the butt and widens towards the cutting edge. It is sub-triangular in cross-section forming three main faces. Flaking covers the whole of each face and just a small area of cortex is present on the crest where two of the faces abut. The cutting …

An incomplete flint pick of Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date (c. 6500 BC – c. 2900 BC). Length 132mm, maximum width 56mm and maximum thickness 34mm. Weight 326g.
The implement, found on the surface within the inter-tidal zone, close to high water mark, is made from an elongated pebble. The butt is missing as a result of an old break. In plan, the sides are roughly parallel but curve and taper near the cutting edge which has a rounded profile in plan. The implement is sub-oval throughout its length.
One face is flaked overall, except at one side close to the cutting edge …

A complete orange patinated flint “pick” or “adze” of Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date (6500 BC – 2900 BC). Length 151.0mm, maximum width 52.5mm and maximum thickness 39.0mm. Weight 332.0g.
The implement has three faces and is generally sub-triangular in cross-section. In plan, it has an oblique butt and a pointed cutting edge. When viewed from the side it has a “hump-backed” profile. Two of the three longitudinal edges have been “battered”, a common feature on implements of this type. Flaking has taken place over the whole surface so that no cortex is prese…

Complete chert pick or adze of Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date (7000 BC - 3000 BC). Length 172mm, width 59mm and 45mm thick. Weight 472g.
The implement is sub-triangular in cross-section and when viewed from the side, has a "hump-backed" appearance. It is possible that this implement was made from a water-worn chert "pebble". The cutting edge is formed by four abrupt, long parallel removals. There is "pitting" on one face and one edge at the butt end indicating that the implement has also been used as a hammer. Mid-brown colour overall.

Complete flint pick of Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date (7000 BC – 3000 BC). Length 148mm, width 62mm and 46mm thick. Weight 512g.
The implement is sub-triangular in cross-section and when viewed from the side, is “hump-backed”. The removals cover the whole of the surface except for a small area of surviving cortex along one of the edges. The cutting edge is formed by a number of semi-abrupt, long and parallel removals. The implement has an orange/brown patina overall and the cortex is pale grey.
