A cast copper alloy medieval mount. The mount is crescent shaped with a trefoil shape linking the ends of the crescent, which itself is decorated with curving grooves. Behind the crescent is slightly hollow and there is a circular flat headed rivet to attach the mount, presumably to a strap of some sort. It is not clear that it had any function beyond decoration.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead weight. The weight is a flat irregular lozenge, plain although slightly concave on the reverse, and with a cast design on the top face. This design has a raised cross with a raised pellet in each quarter. The cross probably also had a central pellet, now damaged, and probably pommee terminals, again now damaged. Biggs and Withers suggest these flat round & square lead weights may have been used in the medieval period to weigh large quantities of silver coinage (maybe in transactions involving large numbers of coins such as rent and tax collection).

A small fragment of a cast copper alloy post medieval buckle frame. The buckle originally had 2 loops with a drilled frame to take a separate pin and bar. The frame was a slightly rounded rectangular shape, with moulded transverse grooves on the top of the frame at the pin bar and thickened at the pin rests. Now only a part of one loop remains. There is iron corrosion on the frame where the pin bar joined, suggesting it was iron.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broken cast copper alloy medieval buckle. The buckle was single looped, probably with a trapezoidal frame, but as most of the frame is missing it is hard to be sure. Just the pin bar and the start of the 2 edges survives, along with the pin, which is formed from copper alloy wire. There was also a plate, which was probably also trapezoidal. However the end is damaged and it is not clear how much is missing. There is a large perforation in the centre of the plate, roughly square in shape, presumably to attach the buckle to a strap or belt. However it seems likely that this was not the…
