A copper alloy post medieval Nuremburg jeton of the rechenmeister type from an anonymous issuer. This example is not directly paralleled by any in Mitchiner, but is very similar to examples on p.415. Jetons such as this were used in financial calculations as is shown on this example, where the rechenmeister (accountant) is using the jetons in his calculations and entering the results in the accounts book.

Probably a copper alloy token from the late 1660s. Official small denomination coinage was scarce in the mid 17th century and many merchants produced their own tokens, especially in the late 1660s. Eventually Charles II issued an official copper coinage and tokens were outlawed in 1672.

A cast lead disc with moulded decoration, probably a token. The piece is a rough disc with one flat plain face and one slightly convex face with moulded decoration, possibly a flower in elaborate tressure, possibly a sun. Lead tokens were in use over a long period of time so it is not possible to date it closely, but as the lead has dulled but not heavily oxidised and white it is probably modern.

A very worn and incomplete rose/orb jeton, a design typical of the late medieval / early post medieval jetons from Nuremburg. Many are attributable to individual masters, but this one is too worn and incomplete to identify precisely.

A fragment of a very worn and illegible mediaval hammered silver coin. The original flan must have been larger than 20mm though thin, so it is probable that the coin was a larger denomination than a penny, maybe a groat or half groat, and probably later rather than earlier (Tudor rather than Plantagenet?).

A copper alloy token from the late 1660s. A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the late 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change. This one may have been issued by merchant in Otley (though the inscription is a little uncertain), whose name probably begins John Pu... There is a grocer from Otley named John Pullen who jointly issued tokens with Christopher Ward. This could be one he issued alone. The arms may also support this as the grocers' arms have a chevron with 3 triple devices.

A very worn copper alloy French medieval jetton of the mid 14th century 'standing king under canopy' type. The jetton is too worn to identify more accurately. There is an irregular perforation off-centre, but it is not clear if it is deliberate (for re-use as a pendant?) or a result of wear.

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A copper alloy coin weight cast in the shape of a flat disc, one face decorated with 3 concentric circles around the border. This face was then marked with punches, with a central dot, a crown above and a fleur de lys below (see Withers 1993 p12 no.90). The reverse is blank. These crown and lys weights were introduced in 1421 and continued in use until the later 15th century (at least 1464 and maybe later). This one was for weighing noble coins from its size, and probably issued under Henry VI as his first reign (1422-61) coincides almost completely with the use of these coins and weig…

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy square coin weight, probably from the early 17th century (round weights were introduced in 1632 and square weights outlawed). The obverse is marked with a crown over the letters X S (signifying 10 shillings). The reverse is illegible, making it hard to distinguish whether it is from the late reign of James I or early reign of Charles I. The coinage was somewhat complex but this weight matches the coinage from James I's third issue of 1619 into the early reign of Charles I, and was for weighing either angel, half laurel (also known as half unite) or double crown coins.

A cast lead 15th century coin weight. The weight is disc shaped, and unifaced, with a crown stamp still visible; although it probably also originally had a lys stamp this is too worn to identify. There are no circles on the weight. Probably for weighing nobles or fraction thereof. (see Withers 1993, p12 nos 95 & 96).
