A copper-alloy dupondius or as of Faustina II, struck under Antoninus Pius, AD 145-61; VENVS, S C; Venus standing left, leaning on column, holding ?apple; Rome, 145-61; Reece period 7.
RIC III -; BMC IV -
The figure of Venus has a similar stance to Spes on the reverse of a coin of Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, struck AD 153-4 (BMC pl. 47, no. 16; RIC III, p. 184, no. 1320). This would suggest that the Faustina piece was struck around the same time and might be another 'Coin of British Association', issued for use in Britain.

TREASURE CASE : 2009 T223
Description: Gold finger ring set with a large blue gemstone and red glass cloisonné. The central cabochon gem is surrounded by four triangular cells. Where these meet, small round cells have been set. Three of these round cells still contain minute granular inlays, although it is impossible to determine whether they are glass pastes, glass or gem stones. A short, straight cell wall emanates from each roundel and meets the corners of the outer, square frame of the bezel, thus bisecting the space between the triangles. Glass slips are still present in on…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
Date: 14th - 15th century
A fragment of a medieval gold badge or mount, now damaged and incomplete. On one side, a standing robed figure cradling a baby probably represents the Virgin and Child. The reverse side is difficult to interpret, but may represent a vase decorated with a cross, with what may be foliage radiating from it. The edges of the badge are engraved with fluting, and may once have included stitching holes, for attaching to clothing or as a hat badge.

Object type: GIRDLE HANGER
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of an early Anglo-Saxon girdle-hanger which has been damaged by heat, probably through cremation. The fragment is part of the terminal and it appears from the breaks that it consists of a short length of vertical shaft together with the bottom edge of one horizontal arm. The top of the shaft ends in a heat-distorted break; at the bottom it turns at nearly 90 degrees to form the arm. The vertical return of this arm is missing, but it originally turned again to form a crossbar re-joining the shaft and a small stub of this joint survives, with the junction delineated by a gro…

Treasure case : 2009 T124 Object Date: 7th century Description: Gold mount Curved gold panel inlaid with garnet cloisonné. A small, gently curving, sub-rectangular tray set inside a cable-twist gold border. Nine garnets on waffered gold foils are inserted into the tray. The back of the mount is plain except for two areas of damage, which are likely to represent previous attachment points. Discussion: It is unclear what kind of object the small mount might have come from. There are numerous possibilities, including large disc brooches (Avent 1975), buckles or sword fittings. Non-destr…
