A cast copper alloy zoomorphic mount in the form of a bird, probably dating from the medieval period. The mount does not appear to retain any form of attachment. The main plate represents the body of the bird, it is flat and has been cut out into the shape of the bird, with its wings, tail and head. The neck and head extend upwards and terminate with the birds beak. The eyes have been crudely drawn on with punches and scratch marks can be seen all over the back of the bird. There is a large rectangular projection extending up from the centre of the birds back. Next to this there is a…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy 11th-century object, which could be a fragment of a bridle cheek-piece or mount. The object is asymmetrical and is moulded on the upper surface with an intertwining beast. The breaks are not recent. The design is openwork. The reverse is undecorated. The surface of the object is a matt mid yellowish-green colour. It has traces of a whitish substance pushed into the grooves on the upper surface. The decoration used on these fittings derives from the late Viking Ringerike style, which represents the penultimate phase of late Viking-age art and was used …

Date: 14th - 15th century A fragment of a medieval gold badge or mount, now damaged and incomplete. On one side, a standing robed figure cradling a baby probably represents the Virgin and Child. The reverse side is difficult to interpret, but may represent a vase decorated with a cross, with what may be foliage radiating from it. The edges of the badge are engraved with fluting, and may once have included stitching holes, for attaching to clothing or as a hat badge.

Treasure case : 2009 T124 Object Date: 7th century Description: Gold mount Curved gold panel inlaid with garnet cloisonné. A small, gently curving, sub-rectangular tray set inside a cable-twist gold border. Nine garnets on waffered gold foils are inserted into the tray. The back of the mount is plain except for two areas of damage, which are likely to represent previous attachment points. Discussion: It is unclear what kind of object the small mount might have come from. There are numerous possibilities, including large disc brooches (Avent 1975), buckles or sword fittings. Non-destr…

A copper-alloy mount, heavily mercury-gilded, with inlaid glass eyes. The mount is in the form of an elongated horned head and is D-shaped in cross-section, with a three-dimensional front and a flat reverse. The head is that of a moustached and bearded man wearing a horned helmet; his face is long and thin, with slightly sunken cheeks. The helmet has a base made up of a triple raised line. The uppermost line turns to form a triple vertical line up the middle of the helmet to the crown. The horns rise and curve to meet and fuse in predatory birds' heads with curving beaks…

A Medieval lozenge-shaped mount bent in the centre to accommodate a facet or corner of the object that it originally decorated. One half of the lozenge is engraved with fleurs de lys and the other with the radiating spokes of an elaborate wheel (?). The engraving may have heraldic significance. The background is tooled, probably to take enamel. The mount is silver-gilt and dates from the fourteenth century.

A cast copper alloy mount or similar object with the remains of a suspension loop. The mount is roughly shield shaped in design, but is slightly concave. On the front of the mount there is a stylised head, in a Romanised/ Neo-classical design. The face has a slender nose, a small mouth and large rounded eyes, within ropework borders. Around the head an elaborate hair style can be seen, again made up of a sort of ropework design. Below the head there is a small drilled hole, which looks as though it could be a later addition to the piece. The top of the object is flat and the remains …

A cast copper alloy Winchester style mount. The object is tongue shaped and decorated in relief. One end has broken off: the break is worn and there is an iron rivet through the opposite end. The reverse is concave. It is not possible to see the decoration clearly due to the worn and incomplete nature of the object, however this mount is similar in shape and design to the Winchester style strap ends figured by Biddle page 499, ref 1059 and probably dates to the 10th- 11th century.
