TREASURE CASE : 2009 T223
Description: Gold finger ring set with a large blue gemstone and red glass cloisonné. The central cabochon gem is surrounded by four triangular cells. Where these meet, small round cells have been set. Three of these round cells still contain minute granular inlays, although it is impossible to determine whether they are glass pastes, glass or gem stones. A short, straight cell wall emanates from each roundel and meets the corners of the outer, square frame of the bezel, thus bisecting the space between the triangles. Glass slips are still present in on…

Please note that this find was recovered during archaeological excavation by the York Archaeological Trust. It will therefore be recorded within their archive. Reference: YORYM:2003.3203, Small Find 16, context 1112. Found in a later-medieval grave during excavations of a medieval cemetery by York Archaeological Trust, however Dr. Martin Henig of Oxford University commented that the ring appeared to be late Roman, circa 4th century, and wondered whether it could have come from a rich, disturbed burial (personal communication with Nicola Rogers, Artefact…

Gold ring, the hoop broken at the back, formed of a thin flat band, with stylised scrolls at the shoulder, the oval bezel with a monkey in relief. There are traces of white enamel on the shoulders and green and black (?) on the bezel.
While this ring conforms to 16th century shape and decoration, the use of a flat hoop and bezel, with metal of this thinness, is extremely unusual and has no parallels in the British Museum collection. While we cannot rule out the possibility that it may be 16th-17th century, the balance of probability is that it is no…
