A copper-alloy seal matrix for the Cloth Subsidy of the County of Essex. From the late 13th century to the 15th century. Inscription: S'SUBSIDII PANNORUM IN COMT ESSE Central motif: Kings Head.(or crowned leopard's head?) The seal will most likely have had a wooden handle, which in now missing. Comments by John Cherry: There are a number of these seals in the British Museum's collections (Tonnochy 1954 nos 29, 30, 31, 32, 33 and 52; these correspond to Egan 1995 nos. 1, 46. 56, 44, 104 and 45). A copper-alloy buckle plate in the form of a capital M.The outer arm of the M has been cut in a scroll-like design, whilst the central one is more solid. One arm has broken off and the break is very worn. At the top of the object the plate has been bent over itself to form a hinge, with a slot through the centre. There is a copper-alloy rivet, with a rounded head and sheet rove still in situ, through the surviving side arm of the M. The front is decorated with incised lines and punched decoration. A copper alloy folding strap clasp of medieval date. The frame is sub-rectangular with outcurved top and bottom edges. The rotating ('folding') end appears never to have had a bar-mount, and is now slightly bent. The metal is a light brownish-green colour and is worn. It is 16.3mm long, 15.2mm wide, 4.4mm thick and weighs 2.1g. Strap clasps date to circa 1250-1450. A similar example can be seen in Whitehead, p.41, no.229.

A cast copper alloy zoomorphic mount in the form of a bird, probably dating from the medieval period. The mount does not appear to retain any form of attachment. The main plate represents the body of the bird, it is flat and has been cut out into the shape of the bird, with its wings, tail and head. An incomplete cast copper alloy single looped buckle frame, oval internally and with a narrowed and off-set bar, which has broken and now largely missing. The pin is also missing. The exterior outside edge of the frame has straighter edges and is wider at the pin rest. There is no obvious groove at the pin rest, but the metal has lost most of its original surface. The metal is a light greenish-brown colour and is heavily pitted. This type of buckle dates from the medieval period, probably the 13th century.

Date: 14th - 15th century A fragment of a medieval gold badge or mount, now damaged and incomplete. On one side, a standing robed figure cradling a baby probably represents the Virgin and Child. The reverse side is difficult to interpret, but may represent a vase decorated with a cross, with what may be foliage radiating from it. The edges of the badge are engraved with fluting, and may once have included stitching holes, for attaching to clothing or as a hat badge.

An incomplete cast copper alloy zoomorphic candleholder, in the form of a dog. The dog is missing his hind legs. The head is at 90° to the legs and has two ears comprised of a triangle with a V-shaped cut at the top. There appears to be grooves around the snout. The dog is wearing a collar. The body of the dog survives, complete with a tail. There is a hole drilled through the centre of the animal's body, suggesting this would have been where the socket was inserted. A fragment of a solid silver-gilt dress fitting or mount, medieval in date, most likely dating to the 15th Century. It is formed from two plates of silver; the surviving pieces are tongue shaped. The top one is slightly smaller than the bottom one; the two have been soldered together. The terminals are both broken, one has an irregular break, while the other has been torn. The edges of the bottom plate have been decorated with an applied cable work design. The top plate is decorated with a chevron design, with further cross-hatched incised marks. The reverse is smooth and undecorated.

TREASURE CASE : 2008 T490 A late medieval gold finger-ring, in the form of a band with a concave profile. The exterior surface is decorated with engraved flowers, leaves and hearts, interspersed among a black letter inscription which reads 'honur et joie' ('honour and joy'). Traces of red, white and black(?) enamel survive in the engraved areas. The ring may have been a marriage ring. Dimensions: Maximum diameter: 19mm. Height: 5mm. The find therefore qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.

An unusual copper-alloy object, not immediately identifiable. It is also incomplete, which hampers its identification. The main surviving piece is made from a flat rectangular copper-alloy plate which has been crimped over. The shaft which extends out from this is also rectangular in cross-section. It appears to have a rivet hole in it, at the point where it has broken. It resembles an early-medieval pair of tweezers, but it does not look right to be one.
