Object type: COSMETIC PESTLE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Incomplete cast copper-alloy Iron Age/Roman cosmetic pestle. Ralph Jackson (1985) has identified this type of artefact as a double-looped idiosyncratic version of a centre-looped type of pestle used as part of a two-piece cosmetic set. The pestle has a circular cross-section but is pointed oval shape in plan. Cast integrally there is a flat-sectioned arm coming from its side which terminates in two small circular loops, although only one now survives (set together like a figure of eight). The metal is pitted and there is a dark greyish-green patina. The majority of centre-looped mortar…

Cast copper alloy three point tag from a surveying chain (Gunters chain). The object consists of a loop at the top (now broken); below this is the neck, which extends into a semi-circle with three ‘teeth’ at the opposite end to the loop, all in the same plane. The object is of a mid reddish-brown patina with areas of mid greyish-green. The surveying chain was first recorded by Edmund Gunter in 1579 and the example shown would not have pre-dated 1620. The surveying chain was marked at every 10 links by tags or tallies, at 10 links a single pointed tag, at 20 links a double …

An incomplete copper-alloy protected-loop (skirted) Roman terret, measuring 51.2mm in total length. The oval loop, through which the rein would have passed has a roughly oval shaped cross-section and flares in thickness towards its base. The loop has broken and only the lower half survives. The breaks are very worn. It is likely that this loop broke as a result of wear. There is some iron staining on the junction where the loop meets the neck. A short collared neck flares downwards into the 'skirt' of the terret which covers the integral copper-alloy loop. The skirt is facetted. A hol…

A fragment of an incomplete copper-alloy covered loop Roman terret. All that survives of the terret is the bottom of the loop, through which the rein would have passed and the top of the skirt. The bottom of the loop has broken on both sides and is extremely corroded and worn. The metal on the internal edge has worn smooth. The loop is joined directly to the upper part of the skirt. The skirt covers the integral copper-alloy loop. It is also corroded and badly damaged. Beneath the 'skirt' projecting from its underside are two corroded stumps of copper alloy, one on either side.
