Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy double looped buckle, with an intact strap bar. The buckle had two sub-oval loops. There are moulded and engraved rosette knops on the outer edges of each loop. There are also moulded knops at each end of the strap bar. The strap bar is very narrow. The frame is uninterrupted; so therefore has no pin recess. The pin is missing. The metal has lost most of its original surface and the metal is a dark reddish-brown colour. This type of buckle dates from circa 1550 - 1650. Parallels for this type of buckle can be seen in Whitehead, 2003, p63.

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount from the Early Medieval period (11th century). This example is an openwork mount with angled flange. This example is incomplete; only the lower part of the mount survives and the breaks are well worn. The main body of the mount consists of an openwork design, which is largely indistinct due to wear and the fact that the upper part of the mount is missing. Two holes remain on either side of the mount, with a further row of four holes below. Below this two rivet holes can be seen, one is empty the other still contains iron corrosion. The…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy unidentifiable object. The object is a clenched fist. The fingers have all been drawn out and the thumb sits on top of the finger – rather than underneath then. There is a projecting knop extending out from the fingers. Around the wrist there is a decorated cuff. The wrist itself is very thin. There is some iron staining on the wrist. The hand probably came from a figurine. It is likely to be post-medieval in date, judging by the way it has been made and the style of decoration on the cuff. The metal is a dark jadey-green colour.

A cast copper alloy ring. The ring has been cast as one piece and has an asymmetrical section. One side of the ring is swollen with a circular section. It then tapers in both directions down to two pointed terminals. The terminals meet but are not joined. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour and is pitted, little wear can be seen. This object has few datable features. The recorder (Liz Andrews-Wilson) saw a very similar object on display in the Nuremberg Museum (Germany). A cast copper alloy annular brooch. The brooch frame is circular with a flattened section. Six rounded collets have been cast integrally to the brooch. The collets have been spaced roughly equally around the edge of the brooch. The settings inside the collets are empty but still contain a white paste (possibly calcium carbonate) which would have held a stone in place. A pin constriction survives between two of the collets. The copper alloy pin survives intact and in situ. The pin has a circular section and has been looped around the constriction. The pin tapers to a blunted point. …
