TREASURE CASE : 2007 T443 Description of Object A small, hollow, sub-rectangular sheet-gold object with two undecorated planar faces. A ribbed moulding - four ribs defined by three channels - runs around one long and two short sides and a slender tubular perforation, formed by the addition of a strip of gold sheet, occupies the fourth side. The object, which resembles a bulla type pendant, is identifiable as a component of Roman jewellery, probably a bead-like pendant from a composite ear-ring or necklace.

A cast lead Papal bulla. The obverse depicts the heads of St. Paul and St. Peter), with a cross between them. The two heads are each surrounded by a circle of pellets. The legend above the busts reads SPASPE. The reverse depicts the name of the Pope. The legend reads IO // h'INNES // PP: XXI (written on three lines, as indicated). A cast copper alloy elaborate quatrefoil harness pendant. The pendant depicts a griffin or eagle, with it wings out-stretched. Only the vague outline of the creature an be seen. The field around the creature has been enamelled with blue enamelling, which has become crystalised. The surface of the pendant is heavily corroded and worn so very little details survives. The suspension loop is worn through, the break is worn. The reverse is undecorated. The object is quite worn with a mid green-brown patina. It is medieval in date.

Treasure case : 2006 T426 This case concerns a silver penny in the name of Cynethryth, wife of Offa, king of Mercia (757-96). Under the terms of Treasure Act (1996), a single coin would not normally constitute Treasure. However, the coin comes from the same site as a hoard of coins found between 1991 and 1997. Two parcels of this hoard were declared to be Treasure Trove, and this coin would therefore count as Treasure as an addendum to the earlier hoard, as long as it can be established that the coin does come from the same hoard. Description of find The ring hoop is oval, and has a smoothly swelling profile which expands from the base to sharply carinated shoulders which support an ovate box setting. The ring has a number of decorative mouldings. One is on the underside, which shadows the shape of the hoop, and the others are unusual concave triangular mouldings on either side of the bezel. Treasure case No: 2006 T433 Date: probably 16th or early 17th century Description: Silver-gilt ring, the hoop of D section, decorated on the exterior with a foliate wreath in relief, bound on each side and at top and bottom. The interior plain and the gilding much worn. Discussion: Although there is no precisely comparable ring in the British Museum, the general shape and decoration are consistent with a date in the 16th or 17th century. Metal content: The precious metal content fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%.

Treasure case No: 2004 T484 Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot fragment of 91%; it weighs 17.14 grams. The fragment has been cut, possibly with a chisel, from one end of a blunt-ended, bar-shaped ingot of rounded trapezoidal section; length, 20 mm; width, 11 mm. A cast copper alloy clothes fastener dating to the 17th century AD. The plate is oval in shape and is decorated with a punched ring and floral motif within a punched ring border. At one end is a small circular attachment loop, with a rounded knop, similar knopped loops can be seen on either side. These eyes would have allowed the fitting to be sewn onto a garment. At the opposite end there is a rectangular loop, through which a ribbon wpuld have been passed. The reverse is undecorated. The object is worn with a mid reddish-brown patina.

A flat backed, cast copper-alloy pendant hanger, half round in section and with the usual beaked and grooved terminals which are pierced for the fixing to the strap rivets, one of these domed rivets is still in place. The integral cast forks which formed the hinge were also drilled out on each side for the hinge pin, the end of the pin remains within the holes. Measuring: length: 49.2 mm., widest: 16.5., thickness: 4.2 mm. The hanger is in good condition and well patinated with a large amount of the original gilding remaining on the front of the hanger.

A fragment of a copper alloy Small-Long brooch dating to the fifth or sixth centuries AD. The fragment comprises a portion of the bow and the foot. The bow has broken off, on the arch. There is an upside down raised T decorating the arched section. Below this the flat panel is undecorated. A cast copper-alloy swivel fitting, this would have formed part of a strap fitting. The swivel comprises two loops and the swivel mechanism, formed from a shank with a rove at one end. The loops are different sizes, the smallest loop also forms the second rove and has therefore been cast integrally with the shank. The second loop is more D-shaped, with a hole through the straight edge for the shank to fit in. The second loop is also decorated with incised grooves. The rove sit inside this loop. One copper alloy rivet remains in situ – at the open end. The object has an undecorated surface. The metal is a dark olive-green. The metal survives in a good condition. This strap end is similar to examples in Egan & Pritchard (1991), p142, Fig: 93.

A cast copper alloy double looped buckle shoe or knee buckle with an integral strap bar. The frame is decoratively moulded, with bifid sides, either side of the strap bar and moulded pin rests. The pin is missing. The frame buckle is complete. The metal is a dark greenish-brown colour. These buckles date from circa 1660-1720. Parallels for this type of buckle can be seen in Whitehead, 2003, p99.
