Object Date: 8th century Description: Finger ring fragments Five fragments of a late Saxon, originally gilt and probably niello-inlaid silver finger ring. All fragments are joining and represent a complete ring with a decorated, rounded bezel. The whole ring is of flat cross-section and the bezel has a fine split in one place. Faint incised, geometric ornament is still visible on the band, which originally overlapped and may have been soldered at the narrowest point; however that join has come apart in antiquity. Gold finger ring with a slightly misshapen hoop, which broadens at the shoulders to meet the bezel. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. A cast copper alloy figurine bust in the form of the goddess Minerva. The object is in a good state of preservation although the surface is rather worn and pitted obscuring some of the finer details. The face of Minerva is particularly worn but the general mouldings clearly show that she was shown life-like, facing forward with curls of hair visible beneath the helmet along the forehead and the hair goes around the sides of the head. Her nose has been lost, through wear and corrosion. Her chin is delicate and her eyes are basic. Minerva wears a high Corinthian helmet with a large cr…

A cast copper alloy gilded decorative mount or fitting. It has been suggested that the fitting dates to the 9th – 11th century and may form part of a horse harness fitting or personal decoration. It has also been suggested that the object represents the cheek and eye guard from a helmet, which may date to the late Roman period. If the later were true this object would be extremely rare. It is therefore more likely to be 9th – 11th century in date. The object is formed from a plate of copper alloy, gilded only on one surface. The plate has become bent and has folded over on it…

The reverse is also worn and pitted and the design is also indistinct, it could be an eagle or griffin with out-stretched wings. A fragment of a probable medieval buckle made from cast copper alloy. The object is curved, with a rounded front, and probably represents most of the outside edge of a buckle frame. Part of one side and the bar are missing. The object has openwork decoration, with eight or nine holes still visible, some incomplete. The reverse is concave to reflect the rounded front. It is in a slightly worn but fair condition with a dark brownish-green patina. Compare NMS-113884, NMS-2407F3 and HAMP-1F10A7, all thought to be 12th or early 13th century.

Double-conical lead weight with central vertical perforation, 8.8mm wide. The weight is decorated in high-relief on both sides with a zig-zag line, with a pellet in each angle. This kind of lead weight is a very frequent metal-detecting find, especially on ploughed and pasture land. There is some archaeological evidence for these lead weights to have been used as spindle whorls in the 16th/17th century (pers. comm. Dr Kevin Leahy), but has been suggested that they could also have been used as net sinkers, fishing weights or weight for traps at a somewhat later date.
