Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Object Date: 8th century Description: Finger ring fragments Five fragments of a late Saxon, originally gilt and probably niello-inlaid silver finger ring. All fragments are joining and represent a complete ring with a decorated, rounded bezel. The whole ring is of flat cross-section and the bezel has a fine split in one place. Faint incised, geometric ornament is still visible on the band, which originally overlapped and may have been soldered at the narrowest point; however that join has come apart in antiquity. Discussion: The bezel is decorated with fine scroll- and knot-work…

Gold finger ring with a slightly misshapen hoop, which broadens at the shoulders to meet the bezel. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. Therefore, this is classed as not Treasure.

Treasure case : 2005 T534 The hoard contains five complete pennies, two cut halfpennies, and one fragment of just over half a penny, which has been snapped along the line of a bend across the middle of the coin. Three of the intact pennies and both of the cut halves have also been bent, and bending of this type is typical of hoards of this period. All of the coins are of the first type of Stephen (1135-53), the so-called 'Watford' type, which is normally dated c. 1136 - c. 1145. The coins are quite heavily worn, which is typical for the type, and this, together with the bending, makes…

Treasure case : 2006 T426 This case concerns a silver penny in the name of Cynethryth, wife of Offa, king of Mercia (757-96). Under the terms of Treasure Act (1996), a single coin would not normally constitute Treasure. However, the coin comes from the same site as a hoard of coins found between 1991 and 1997. Two parcels of this hoard were declared to be Treasure Trove, and this coin would therefore count as Treasure as an addendum to the earlier hoard, as long as it can be established that the coin does come from the same hoard. Another find of Anglo-Saxon coins from the same site i…

Treasure case : 2006 T598 a small parcel of ‘sterling’ type pennies, struck after 1279. The coins had been exposed to considerable heat (the melting point of pure silver is 961.93 degrees Celsius) and were partially melted and fused together. Surface detail was clearly visible on only three coins, one of which was struck in London. The parcel was found to weigh 52.8g, suggesting that it contained approximately 37 silver pennies. Medieval sterling pennies were struck in silver comprising 92.5% pure silver co-mixed with 7.5% alloy. The coins are fused together, are clearly as…
